How to Juice On a Budget and Save Money

If you want to try juicing but money is stopping you, don’t worry. Juicing on a budget is possible and quite affordable as long as you are judicious about the fruits and vegetables you juice, the kind of juicer you buy and how much juice you are actually drinking. You can squeeze in the health benefits of juicing, while not breaking the bank at the same time. If you need a good juicer for your home, you can check this guide here.

Buying vegetables and fruits for juicing on a budget

When you buy a single expensive fruit to juice, it is obviously going to be more expensive. That is why it is important to make juice from a combination of fruits and vegetables, using the cheaper ones as a base. For instance, carrots, apples and tomatoes are usually cheaper to buy than berries and exotic fruits, so you should use more of the less expensive produce.

  • High water containing fruits and vegetables give a greater yield of juice than their denser counterparts. These include cucumbers, melons, romaine lettuce and other greens. Citrus fruits, too, have high water content, so yield more juice. It is always a good idea to make different kinds of juices rather than sticking to one blend.

  • Buy from local farmers’ markets where you will get seasonal produce in bulk. Many vegetables and fruits last a long time in cool conditions. Or you can buy and share costs and the produce with friends or relatives, thus saving more.

  • Often supermarkets put fresh foods at discounted prices if they are bruised or blemished. You can still use this kind of produce after removing the bruised or damaged parts.

  • Grow your own if you have the space. If you don’t you can still grow herbs and greens in small pots and add them to make fresh juice.

  • You can also quite cheaply grow your own sprouts and add them to juices for additional nutritional values as well as bulk.

Juicers on a budget

Before you even consider juicing, you must have the best juicer out there. It is important to get the right kind of juicer at an affordable price so you get more bang for your buck. Among the items you need to check on the juicer are

  • Power – The higher the power rating of the juicer, the more powerful and efficient it will be, so you will be able to get more juice and more dry pulp.

  • Ease of cleaning – if parts of the juicer can go into the dishwasher, it will be much easier for you to use and you will also use it more often.

  • Size and capacity – if you are planning to make a lot of juice at a time, you need a high capacity juicer.

Apart from these factors, there are different kinds of juicers available that work very differently. You can get

  • Centrifugal juicers – these are usually cheap and work by pulverizing the fruits and vegetables and extracting the juice that comes out from a chute while the pulp is left in the straining basket or container. These do not yield as much juice as some other kinds of juicers.

  • Cold press juicers – also called masticating juicers, these juicers are efficient and juice greens, herbs and grasses. Cold Press Juicer give more high quality, pulpy juice, but the fruits and vegetables need to be cut more finely than for a centrifugal juicer. While they are expensive, you can get as much as 35 percent more juice when compared to a centrifugal juicer.

  • Citrus juicers – these can only be used for making juice from citrus fruits and so are limiting in nature.

  • Blenders – while you can juice a lot of different fruits and vegetables in blenders quite finely, the pulp and seeds will get mixed into the juice and the juice will then have to be strained with an appropriate mesh to yield the juice. The seeds and stones of some fruits may have to be removed before juicing as they can add a bitter flavor to the juice or can even damage the blender blades.

  • Manual juicers – these are the cheapest, but you do need do a lot of work to get the juice and so you may not use it as often.

If you are juicing on a budget you may want to buy a centrifugal juicer or a manual one to save costs or you can use your blender. After you have used it and decided you would prefer to invest in a high end one and have the budget to invest in one, you can buy a more expensive juicer as it does pay for itself in the long run.
