INTERVIEW: Punk Supergroup The Coolies (Feat. Kim Shattuck, Melanie Vammen and Palmyra Delran)

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Uh Oh”?

Melanie: “Uh Oh” is a melodic poppy gem! We’re so excited that Wicked Cool loves it and is putting out our EP. Yay!

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Kim Shattuck: I wrote it about people who are extremely hysterical that they even talk shit about their own friends. Uh oh there’s she going again, can’t help making fun of your friend. No one thing played into this song!

The single comes off your new self-titled EP – why naming the record after the band?

Kim Shattuck: The Muffs first album was self-titled as all great albums are, and if they can do it, so can we!

How was the recording and writing process?

Palmyra: Most of the songs were Kim’s, but Melanie and I both wrote songs with Kim through cyberspace! It was super fun to bounce ideas back & forth, too. Recording was the same way, since I’m in NY and Kim & Melanie are in L.A. We sent ideas to each other to get the final mixes.

Would you call this a departure from your previous musical work?

Melanie: Absolutely not! You know we’ve all been doing this a while and have our own style and musical taste that never really changes. We all love the same kind of music! So, ta-da the perfect formula for making and playing new tunes!

What made you want to have all proceeds go to the ALS Foundation?

Kim Shattuck: Sadly, it runs in my damn family, and that disease is a mystery to just about every scientist! We are definitely interested in finding a cure for ALS! Cure it already!

Was it easy to translate your musical vision into the animated personas?

Palmyra: With a band called The Coolies, it kind of makes sense to be an animated girl gang. We’re having so much fun doing this project.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

Palmyra: I can speak about the one Kim & I wrote together – Blueberry Crumble. It’s about when you meet a person and you think they’re really cool, but then they show that they’re really an ass, and the friendship crumbles.

Any plans to hit the road?

Palmyra: We will definitely perform these songs live!

What else is happening next in The Coolies’ world?

Melanie: Us Coolies are getting ready to shake our Coolies!
