INTERVIEW: Kellen Saip

Hi Kellen, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Thanks so much for having me folks! I’ve been swell! Cant complain I do most of my complaining in my lyrics ;).

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “DOWN”?

The new single is a slow burning success. I was fortunate enough to have Matt Kelly from Ben Roger’s and City and Colour fame to play some haunting pedal steel and having producer Kyler Pierce at the healm has made this EP a smooth sailing process.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I’ve been in this industry for awhile now and In turn have battled my own demons and addictions through it all I feel everyone can relate to feeling down and alone at some point and time in there lives no matter what you do or who you are. That’s kinda the jist of the tune.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Definitely been talks about it. We will let that happen organically if its meant to be.

How was the recording and writing process?

It’s been amazing working with my pal Kyler Pierce. We very rarely have different ideas about where the song should go. We always seem to be on the same page for the most part and I’m a big fan of his work musically as well so win win. 5 minutes dont go by without a Simpson reference and that’s the kind of world I want to live in.

What was it like to work with Matt Kelly and how did that relationship develop?

Matt was great! I’ve been a fan of his through Vancouver artist Ben Roger’s and other projects hes played on. He has a style like none other and I really wanted that feeling on this track. So I asked and he replied and next thing I knew he was in abbotsford laying down some serious steel!!!

How much did he get to influence the song?

I played it for him and he just did his thing and that’s what you hear, he also did some background vocals which was a real treat. The beers were extra cold that day!

What role does Chilliwack play in your music?

Since I’ve been in chilliwack I feel I’ve played and written alot more based on my roots. It’s an amazing place where you can get away and just fish in a matter of minutes and I appreciate that. The music community it blooming as well and has alot of talent to be discovered.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Finishing up a EP with Kyler that will be out later this year!! Kepp your ears to the ground.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

This year for sure and I believe this guy will be self titled. It’s my third project released so I feel it’s time haha

Any plans to hit the road?

I hit the road in August for a cross Canada tour with Dear Father. Dates will be available soon at www.kellensaipmusic.com

What else is happening next in Kellen Saip’s world?

I put out a single awhile ago after winning best country artist of the year at the Fraser Valley Music Awards titled “Dont Be Scared” and I have now collaborated with a brewery in Abbotsford named Old Abbey Ales and we created a Arnold Palmer style lager together it will be available in certain liquor stores and at the brewery all summer so check it out!! You can hear that single and more at www.kellensaipmusic.bandcamp.com.
