Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Fall”?
Fall is my second single and is an upbeat but chilled indie rock/pop song. It’s about realising you love someone.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I normally write songs about people I know, or they’re at least vaguely based around these people or myself. I normally set out to write a song about something in particular and it ends up turning into something else completely.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
We just finished up filming a video for the single and it should be out a bit closer to the release on July 26th.
How was the recording and writing process?
I’ll normally write a song with just a guitar and then start piecing together a demo on my laptop. For Fall we recorded everything over one day in Glasgow. The track was engineered and mixed by Ross Saunders (Dusty Reel) at GloWorm Studios in Glasgow. I tend to do things slightly backwards and record the guitar lines and vocals first before putting drums and bass down.
What role does Glasgow play in your music?
Glasgow has a really vibrant music scene and musicians of all different genres mix together. I’ve spent a lot of time in the folk scene in Glasgow and it’s certainly had an impact on my writing.
Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than working on your own?
It’s definitely a totally different experience writing music on your own as opposed to with a band. They both have their advantages. I think writing on your own can lead to a greater sense of satisfaction but writing with others can sometimes lead you down a path to new ideas you’d never have been able to think of yourself with a song.
Does the new single mean we can expect new material – how’s that coming along?
I’ve got another two songs recorded and they’ll probably be coming out a few months after Fall.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
I’d expect to release the next song after Fall towards the end of the year.
What else is happening next in Craig Irving’s world/Any plans to hit the road?
The main focus right now is on writing and recording music. There’ll definitely be gigs in the not too distant future but over the next few months, I want to release a few more singles and establish my sound, before getting the band together to rehearse and gig the songs.
