Home / Miscellaneous / Other Stuff / 8 SUMMER ESSENTIALS FOR MEN

‘Summertime and the living is easy’, well not actually, especially when your daily commute involves thirty minutes on the subway, and the city just keeps getting hotter and hotter. So, whether your summers are spent at your private beach house or like the rest of us, you’re still stuck with the daily commute troubles, here are a bunch of essentials which will help you to enjoy, or at least ease the stress of, the heat.

Many women apply sunscreen as part of their daily routine, but many men don’t and that’s why Melanoma kills twice as many men as women.  UV rays penetrate car windows and clouds, so don’t kid yourself that just because you’re not spending the day at the beach you needn’t bother.  Put a reminder on your phone, stick a post it to the mirror, do what is necessary to remind yourself to apply sunscreen every day.  Go for a hydrating sunscreen of at least SPF30 and if you have sensitive skin, go for a mineral based cream with zinc oxide.

After Sun Lotion

Once you’ve damaged your skin, you’ve damaged your skin and you can’t undo it.  What you can do is prevent further damage. The longer sunburnt skin is ignored, the greater the depth of damage to the skin layers.  After sun lotions rehydrate the skin and reduce peeling.  Aloe Vera is generally recognised as the magic ingredient to look out for, it cools the skin and sooths the pain.  Saving money on after sun lotion is easy, just don’t get burnt.

A Travel Bag

Keep it packed and ready to go, ready for those last-minute invitations and cheap flight alerts.  Packing in advance saves time and stress and means that you won’t ever arrive at your destination to discover you forgot your swimwear.

Chino Shorts

Designed by the British military to be hardwearing and comfortable, chino shorts are also stylish, practical shorts, perfect for the beach or barbeque.

Not just the most stylish accessory you can own but an absolute necessity if you are serious about protecting your eyes.  Sunglasses lose their UV protection over time,so make sure to update your sunnies every once and a while.  Choosing a pair from a make that offers high protection, as well as fashionable styles is key.

Flip Flops

The day you put your flip-flops on is like a starting pistol for summer.  Go for a pair that are good quality and comfortable for your feet, as you’ll hopefully be wearing them a lot! Havaianas offer a range of styles and colours, perfect for those beach days.

A Hand Fan

I know what you’ve thinking but give me a moment here.  Those little rechargeable hand fans are a great way to keep cool at the office or on the subway, but if you really want to kick aside those stereotypes you could get yourself a traditional men’s hand fan, described by the manufacturers as ‘small and sober’.  Maybe you could start a trend.

Cooling Spray

The next best thing to getting into water, this cooling spray is a great way to get instant relief from the heat.
