INTERVIEW: Gavyn Bailey

Hi Gavyn, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi I’ve been great! Just been working really hard on my own music for the last couple years and been trying to get it out. Gearing up for this release and some shows that I’ll be playing!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “No Space”?

I wrote “No Space” in beginning of 2018 with Ashley Maietta & Trevor Muzzy.  It was my first session actually writing with Trevor and I feel like it set the bar pretty high for all the sessions following. We were really motivated after that to keep creating. It’s about moving on from something that is no longer suiting you in your life; there’s no space for this person any longer.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I wrote the song a couple weeks after I had broken up with my significant other of four years. It was the song I needed to write to get all of those built up emotions out about how I was feeling about the relationship’s end.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes! We’ve been working with some really creative people and working out different ideas.

How was the recording and writing process?

The recording and writing process was a little unique with this one. We wrote and recorded the first verse and chorus, stopped for the day, and ended up living with that demo of just the first half of the track for a couple months before we wrote the rest of the song. I wasn’t sure exactly where I wanted it to go yet and it was already such a special song that I didn’t want to ruin it. When we wrote it, I couldn’t sing in my normal voice because I had just gotten over a cold. All I could do was sing in my head voice…so we recorded the demo with my sick voice and ended up keeping the first take of vocals because the emotion was so present.

What was it like to work with Trevor Muzzy and how did that relationship develop?

Working with Trevor on this song was amazing. I just felt like he really understood the sound I was trying to get at–throughout the whole process we found the sound together. I love Trevor’s guitar playing and he has a natural instinct toward the music I’m trying to create. He has a very unique ear for sounds I would never think to add. Ashley Maietta actually introduced me to him and the three of us have now written a good handful of songs together.

How much did he get to influence the song?

I think he had a big influence on the song! He was there from the start and had a hand in the creation of the entire thing.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than working on your own?

I prefer to collaborate, actually. I’ll have ideas in my head throughout the day that I’ll get on paper but I prefer to work with other writers/producers. I think when I write by myself I’m in my head quite a bit, so I have a hard time finishing things. When I collaborate, I have that instant validation knowing that a line or melody works. I think that’s why collaboration is so special, because you never know what you could have gotten if that specific person wasn’t in the room.

How has the likes of Elliott Smith and Bon Iver influence your writing?

I’ve always been a fan of Bon Iver’s sound and the simplicity of some of his earlier productions. It always intrigued me, I wanted to write songs like that. Elliott Smith is very storytelling, a sing-songwriter-type, it’s the kind of music I grew up listening to and tend to find myself writing.

How did your hiatus serve as a great source of inspiration for your music as a whole?

The hiatus mainly was to focus on a career in songwriting and to better improve my writing skills. I think being able to just focus on that opened up so many doors for me. I think too, it helped me be more able to be vulnerable with the things I wanted to write about.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

I have a lot of new material, it’s just a matter of refining things. We definitely have more music coming.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I am a perfectionist and will most likely change the title a hundred times before I’m satisfied.. so for that, I’ll say stay tuned! (ha-ha)

Any plans to hit the road?

I would love to! It’s the first time I’m putting music out in so long. The music industry is a mystery so it’s a “we’ll see” at this point!

What else is happening next in Gavyn Bailey’s world?

I’m headed to Europe this Summer to be a songwriting mentor at a writing camp hosted by Tim Schou. I’ll be playing MondayMonday over at Hotel Cafe on August 4th. Otherwise just continuing to write and hopefully putting out an EP soon!
