INTERVIEW: Angelique

Hi Angelique, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey! I’m so excited to be here. I’ve been really good, so excited about the release of Wings.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Wings”?

Absolutely, Wings is ultimately for anyone who has struggles with toxicity in relationships. Friendships, boyfriends, girlfriends, etc… I wanted to sort of lay out the groundwork for people coming out of those situations for how to heal. That way they could know they aren’t alone, and there is support through the hardships. It’s always been really important to me to care for others. I’m extremely empathetic but I wanted to go beyond that, take what I’ve learned from personal experiences and those of my friends to really help.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I think it was a multitude of events that inspired this song, I feel like due to my kind nature people have often mistook my kindness for leverage and in turn I’ve definitely had my fair share of heartache. I’ve also watched friends be completely manipulated by partners and other friends. But the thing is, it truly is something everyone has either gone through once or will go through at one point or another in their lifetime. It’s such a broad subject matter that a multitude can relate to the lyrics, and heal their own particular struggles. That was the whole goal.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

I’m actually in the early stages of planning a video for this song, with two amazing, strong women who are both talented videographers in the Toronto area. I can’t release anymore details at this time but I will be releasing information on my Instagram page soon!

How was the recording and writing process?

I guess we should start with the writing process for this song, which was anything but ordinary. I tried so many different lyrical structures, verses, hooks, etc… And then it just dawned on me that this song is not normal, and that’s what makes it so hauntingly beautiful. I immediately through process out the window, and just put myself in a fresh state of mind where I just essentially freestyled the whole thing, verse for verse. Not holding anything back is what I think gave this song the kick it needed. Recording this song was like a therapy session, I poured my whole heart out and vented all those emotions into that mic.

What role does Toronto play in your music?

Toronto plays a huge role in my music, this place is a breeding ground for creativity and independent thinking. The music scene here is incredible; we have so many artists that are doing amazing things while also happy to share the knowledge. They work incredibly hard but leave the door open for us newcomers. There is no selfishness here. I think that, alongside the unique Toronto sound of RNB has really inspired me. I love The Weeknd, Partynextdoor, Anders, and so many more artists from this area who have sort of dissected uncomfortable emotion in their songs. Which is exactly what I was trying to do in Wings.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Absolutely, my team and I have been hard at work. I’m in the recording process yet again and I’m aiming for another single towards the end of summer and maybe an EP in the fall. I’m always working, I’m so excited for you all to hear what’s coming next.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

All I can say is we are going to have something for everyone, I’m really analyzing where I’m at in life currently and exploring how I can translate my experiences to others.

Any plans to hit the road?

I’m going to be planning a couple shows for later this summer in Toronto, Kingston and maybe Ottawa. My Instagram will have all the information! Hoping to see as many of you fans as possible. Maybe create some new ones as well.

What else is happening next in Angelique’s world?

Angelique’s world is crazy right now, but it’s a good crazy. Just writing, recording, creating and enjoying life. Thank you so much for having me! Check out Wings (Freestyle) on Spotify, or Apple Music.
