Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Crackerjack”?
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
No, this song was done in a totally different way from how we usually write. We decided to focus completely on the music. Dont think about vocal melodies or lyrics just the tune. So we had that finished and then we co-wrote the lyrics for the first time which are basically just mimicking the vibe of the song. It doesn’t really have a subject, it’s just about feeling good. It’s meant to make you swagger when you hear it.
How did you come up with the whole concept for the zombies on this video?
A drunk conversation as usual. We wanted to stand out a bit, the song is about feeling cool so the convo went –
‘what would look cool?’
‘what about us gettin chased off zombies?’
And that was pretty much it.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
Stressful. Great idea but then the logistics of getting 35 zombies, in makeup, at an abandoned hospital, on a Saturday becomes very real very fast. But we were lucky and a huge group of our friends showed up and helped out doing make up etc and just being there to make the video look awesome. If any of you are reading this then THANK YOU! definitely worth it in the end, we have worked with the director before so he knew straight away how we wanted it to look.
How was the recording and writing process?
Recording it was easy, we all knew how it had to sound. We had a few ideas in the studio and our producer Ryan Sheridan will always suggest ideas but it’s pretty much exactly how it sounds live, we didn’t want to lose the live and raw feel of how we had been playing at rehearsals.
How has Wolfmother and Foo Fighters influenced your writing?
There’s loads of different bands that influence our writing, i think we have quote they particular bands in the past because we have been told we sound a rough mix of them when people try to place how we sound. We do love both though!
What role does Scotland play in your music?
Scotland is where we are from so in a way everything? We aren’t a political outfit but we are a SCOTTISH rock n roll band.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
Yes it does, we have our debut album coming out soon. There will be a second single called ‘Come and Go’ released first then the album.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Release dates will be announced within the next few weeks. The album is also called Crackerjack.
Any plans to hit the road?
Yeah we are working hard in the background just now, after the release of the next single we will be doing a lot of shows to promote the album release.
What else is happening next in Jack Rabbit Slams’ world?
A second video that will hopefully top a zombie apocalypse
