INTERVIEW: Angie Marie Go

Hi Angie, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey there Rafi and everyone at VENTS! I’ve been pretty dandy. How about you?

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Miss Universe”?

I wrote this song with my buddy Ross Falzone, and I think the song does speak to what I have learned since moving to Nashville. I came to him with the idea of counting out the days and the years of my life and we followed the songwriting muse from there. The name of the EP, “What Have I to Learn” actually comes from a lyric in this song, so I think that makes it a really fitting introduction to do whole project.

What made you want to tackle this particular event?

I wasn’t too far off of my “quarter life crisis” at the time of writing it, and Ross was in the headspace to collaborate with me on this concept. I was figuring out my identity, or at least a piece of it. think it’s too easy for me to draw my value as a human being from my college degree, my relationships, or other ultimately unsatisfying avenues. I’m aiming for that balance of appreciating where I have been, who I‘ve met and how I’ve grown from my experiences.

Was that always the initial idea or were you rather drawn into it?

I came to Ross with a more campy upbeat Idea of counting out more days and such, but Ross helped guide me to what I really wanted to say. I reflected more on the heart of the matter, and the song became more of a conversation to Ross or to the universe as to what is my purpose.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

I’m going to release a lyric video which was made by Hunter Stutts!

The single comes off your new album Volume 1: What I Have To Learn – would you call this a conceptual record?

Not exactly no. Each song has it’s own statement. I see it as the first half of a two part album.

Would each volume follow a different theme?

I see the last track off of Volume 1 as the end of the first paragraph or perhaps a semicolon of the entire idea. Volume 1 is more of an introduction to the pieces of my and the sound that has been living in my brain the past decade or so. Volume 2 will expand on that.

What’s the story behind the title?

Out of all the lyrics and titles, it was the last piece of the puzzle to come into the picture. I had been sitting on the Volume 1 and Volume 2 idea for a while. Like I say in “Miss Universe,” I’m 100% me. I think it’s a fitting “hello” to the world from me and my little sonic imagination.

How was the recording and writing process?

I spread out most of the recording process over the course of a few days at Dark Horse Studios in Franklin, TN. I worked with Robin Crow and Kelly Robinson there to carve out some time and space for my band and I to record some noise! After we captured the bulk of the record, we did some overdubbing and producing in our homes. As for writing, the songs are all co-writes that happened over a series of years of living here in Nashville.

What were some of the things you get to learn on this record?

Just to name a few, I learned about myself, my friends, how much time recording takes, to have a voice memo of every little idea, and trust the process.

Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

I love going to the movies and drawing inspiration from my favorite story lines and sound tracks.

Any plans to hit the road?

Yeah! I’m working towards a fall tour as we speak,  it the details are TOP SECRET at the moment.

What else is happening next in Angie Marie Go’s world?

I’m gearing up to release the next single and drop the whole EP in the next few months!
