Sacramento teenager ShooterGang Kony effortlessly mixes party and pathos. Swapping bars with Sada Baby atop a glistening mob instrumental courtesy of The Architekz, Kony shares “Shoot Front The Reverend,” his new single. Further proving the synergy between Detroit and Northern California, the track finds the two rappers colorfully demolishing their rivals, alternating declarative statements with tumbling fonts of syllables: “Fourteen bad hoes all up in my section/I ain’t even old enough, I still got choppa in possession/40 got a body on it, I’m just tryna show progression/If they catch me at church, I’m gon’ shoot front the reverend,” rhymes Kony. Premiered by HYPEBEAST, “Shoot Front The Reverend” is a testament to the 17-year-old’s rap prowess, as his violent and colorful verse stands on equal footing with Sada Baby’s typically animated appearance. “Shoot Front The Reverend” is the latest single from Second Hand Smoke, Kony’s upcoming project.
Says ShooterGang Kony to HYPEBEAST, “Sada’s a genuine dude. He already f*cks with people I f*ck with, so it was bound to happen. Blood told me he don’t just be doing features unless he f*ck wit you for real. And I ain’t finna do no music with nobody unless it’s out of love anyway. I really just had hit Architekz like “Ay, you got some Kony-and-Sada-Baby-type shit?” and he sent that beat right over. Besides that that hit just made itself. I was just talkin’ sh*t.”
Quickly rising amongst the California elite, ShooterGang Kony’s Second Hand Smoke is the most assured project in the already-prolific rapper’s career. Earlier this month, The FADER premiered the project’s lead video single “Off The Dribble,” a stone-faced anthem inspired by the 2018 death of Kony’s brother Terryon. Featuring appearances from Sada Baby, Nef The Pharaoh, DaBoii, Mike Sherm, and members of Kony’s ShooterGang posse, Second Hand Smoke releases on July 17th via EMPIRE.
