INTERVIEW: Moon Willis

Hi Moon, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been great! How are you?

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “I Like The Way”?

I’m so happy this one’s finally out! We first started it a couple of years ago when I first started making house tracks. I’ve made so many songs since but I always come back to this one.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Nothing in particular! The song actually came about really quickly. Jenna (Andrews – a writer on the song) was dancing around the room freestyling into a handheld mic – I heard the ‘I like the way you feel about me’ line and knew we could base the whole song around that.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes! We’ve got something truly crazy in the pipeline. Think ‘Sweet Like Chocolate’ meets that weird side of kids’ YouTube.

How was the recording and writing process?

All my tunes happen the same way. The initial ideas happen really quickly in a burst of inspiration, then I spend a really long time tweaking them to get them right. I still need to get a handle on that!

What was it like to work with Etta Bond and what did she brought up to the table?

I’ve known Etta for a while now, it’s so nice to finally have a tune out with her. She’s got a unique voice & style and she’s never done a dance track before this.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with or remixing someone else rather than working on your own?

It’s always about the vocal for me – so I never feel like I’m working by myself for too long! Remixes and original tunes just happen in reverse order. With my own tracks, I make a riff and look for a singer to fit, and with a remix I start with a vocal and play stuff around that.

Having gotten to work as well with some legendary names from the industry as Nile Rodgers – what have you learned from these experiences?

Nile’s a legend!! I’m a bass player originally and we jammed together in the session. Those Chic grooves are more powerful than anything else, and to experience that in person was eye opening.

You’ve also gotten to gain more and more momentum which each new release – does this put any sort of pressure on you as you release new material or rather the opposite?

It would be, but I’m very confident in the material that’s coming down the line! I’ve got at least a years worth of material on my computer and I’m making new stuff all the time.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

I’ve got tracks ready to go – watch this space!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I’ll have to keep that secret for now 🙂

Any plans to hit the road?

Keep your eyes peeled! I can’t wait to get out and play the tunes out to people.

What else is happening next in Moon Willis’ world?

I’m working with some really great artists at the moment. Bree Runway, The Magician, Olly from Years & Years and some other secret projects that I can’t talk about yet!
