June 14 see’s the release of ‘As The River Flows’ the powerful new single from Wallis Bird, the first to be taken from her brand new album, Woman, out later this year on 27 September, via Mount Silver Records/Caroline International.

With a rousing chorus and a sense of urgency running throughout, ‘As The River Flows,’ is a big, bold and brave return for the Irish singer songwriter – a modern day protest song overtly dedicated to Alan Kurdi, the three-year-old Syrian refugee whose drowned body was photographed in 2015 on a Turkish beach. The song directly addresses contemporary, complex issues of immigration, especially in its confrontational statement, “If you can move/ Then I will too”, and its explicit challenge, “Aren’t you brave enough/ To pave a basic decency for humankind?” It’s intended, Bird reveals, to dispute ideas of the ‘right kind’ of immigrant, an attitude she labels “supremacist and disgusting. Movement and evolution are our DNA. A border or a wall never stopped anyone. We’re not even motionless when we die. Our body rots and feeds the earth, becomes a brick, becomes a house, becomes a landmark, becomes a sentiment, until the end of time.”

‘As The River Flows’ is taken from Bird’s upcoming sixth album – Woman, a remarkably polished yet emotionally raw album, a daring synthesis of Bird’s songwriter roots and passion for, among other genres, soul, it’s eleven songs long but 37 minutes short: pointed, powerful, and packed with truths and levity. Written and almost exclusively performed by Bird, with regular associate Marcus Wüst as co-producer – Woman is Bird’s transparent attempt to speak out against injustice and counteract apathy through bold, blunt confessionals. “Like most artists, I’ve probably shirked my responsibilities at times so as not to rock any boats,” she confesses. “But I decided it was time to change that.”
