Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Idols”? /Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I imagined myself rising and piercing through the atmosphere of my former life. From there I could observe with some level of amusement the lifestyle I once lived. The classic “last time I swear” repetition. The song has a really upbeat tempo and has a pretty “happy sound” musically, while the lyrics are quite dark. Somehow that contrast reminds me of the smiths.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
There is a video in the works yes.
The single comes off your new album Dovetale – what’s the story behind the title?
The title is a play on dovetail as in a change in direction, and dove tale, as in stories of peace and resolution.
How was the recording and writing process?
It was very fluid and light spirited. Ideas came naturally and without effort. I tried not to get in the way of inspiration by overthinking or allowing doubt to enter.
How much would you say this turn out to be the end of an era for you?
The more I think about it the more I see the beginning of an Era. I would love to go outside of my comfort zone on the next one. I don’t want to be a legacy project, spinning my wheels. It’s always risky ostracizing your “fans” with direction changes, but as I have observed it elsewhere, I think it’s better to risk ostracizing than to insult them with the same ole same ole’ .. You’ll never catch up with people’s expectations if you go there anyway.
What was the direction you seek on this new chapter?
I need to live a bit more to fully understand the direction. Melody driven, and groove oriented would be a start.
What role does Montreal play in your music?
Montreal has allowed for cheap living, and zero shortage of drama. This city is one giant minor chord.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
I’m trying my best not to understand where it comes from
Any plans to hit the road?
Many shows being routed in the fall and into next year including a Germany tour, and Ontario/Quebec dates. Everything will be updated on Krief.ca
What else is happening next in Krief’s world?
Working on new material (I have 70+ songs on my dry erase board). An EP is already tracked and mastered, ready to go. Sorting that out. Producing and mixing a lot of music for other artists, as well !
