INTERVIEW: Aphrah

Hi Aphrah, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Good thanks!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Northern Lights”?

Yes, it’s an atmospheric track and it’s the first song I wrote with Jack Gourlay. It’s definitely one of my favourites that we have written together.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

The song is about capturing a moment in time with someone you love. It’s a very special song for me and captures the beauty we can find all around us if we take time to stop and look up from our busy lives.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Not at the moment but never say never.

How was the recording and writing process?

I had the verse chords and lyrics for a while, but it’s one of those songs that I got a bit stuck on and couldn’t see where it could go, so I had left it. I showed what I had so far to Jack along with some other song ideas and we decided on this one and wrote the chorus together. Recording was a really smooth process as it’s such a special song for me, I was able to capture the emotions in the recording with just a couple of takes and I love the simplicity of the piano.

What was it like to work with Jack Gourlay and how did that relationship develop??

It was great working with Jack, he’s a very dedicated writer and producer who always gets loads out of the sessions we have and we’ll be working on some more music together in the future.

How much did he get to influence the song?

He influenced the chorus and the structure and I wrote the verses so it felt like we had both brought our best to the writing session.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than working on your own?

I think every collaboration is different as each person is unique. It’s good to have someone else in the room to bounce ideas off and spur you on.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes I have more songs that I’ve written with Jack. I’ve also been in the studio with Steve Brown who produced both Rumer and Laura Mvula’s debut albums and I’ve been writing with Kimberly Anne (The Vamps, Sam Feldt, Lewis Watson) and Rhiannon Mair (Bryde, Emma McGrath, Lanta). I’m really looking forward to releasing the new material.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Northern Lights, my debut single which is out on Friday 21 June.

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes in the future – keep checking my socials for announcements on that.

What else is happening next in Aphrah’s world?

As well as my debut single, Northern Lights, released on Friday 21 June, I’ll be releasing some more singles this year and also finishing up some tracks with Steve Brown and Rhiannon Mair. It’s all about writing the best songs I can and working with great writers and producers.
