INTERVIEW: Lotus

Hi Lotus, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Still hearing music in my head and coming up with fresh ideas. In any case I’ve been doing well and thanks!

From all the songs out there, what made you want to somehow pay tribute to the original 84 classic?

Yes this classic stands the test of time with its amazing lyric and melody! Many legends have created such music for the backgrounds of our life. When you listen they take you to old and new places and this is a way to translate your time line on Earth.  You can do this with any great classic work.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Working with Universal on a plan to make this video. So all of this in the works.

How was the recording and writing process?

The recording and writing process starting as a concept born out the original “The Power Of Love”. We took the melody and lyrics and melody of the chorus and then added new parts, verses, bridge, beats etc. with a new modern style arrangement. Since artist like Jason Derulo did this with “Time To Say Goodbye” and he created a great derivation this gave me the  inspiration to make something alone these lines. Take a classic and make it into a new song using the chorus. I have plans to do with this with other classics and will be releasing this in the not to distance future.

How did you get to balance the original with your own twist?

That’s the magic how to make this work. Mainly felt it emotionally and then I made the new parts as a new writing session coming up first with the chorus then the verses etc. You have to make this a newly credited copyright as if the song never was created. Imagine yourself in the same room with the original composer. I had a change to talk to Holly Johnson from “Frankie Goes To Hollywood” about the song. This was amazing and gave way to making the track.

What was it like to work with Gravy and Miura Keys?

Gravy is a legion and he worked with Nicki Minaj before she was famous. He gave me a great deal of creative freedom in the whole process. They were not only creators but friends. Gravy comes from the old school of Rap and he played Notorious B.I.G.” in the film which starred Jamal Woolard (Gravy) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notorious_(2009_film) . Miura put his own spin on the record. He was very cool in his approach and was a pleasure to add his version to the package.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than working on your own?

Always, that’s how you reach beyond yourself and creations. Normally you tend to go somewhere more in your own design. What collaborating does it takes off the map and road to create different colors or add to what you’re painting to the music, a newly created spirit in the track and song. Singers can also bounce off your ideas and make new phrasing in the lyrics. They days it’s all about character in your vocals. When you work on your own you can also limit your concepts or emotions. It’s also fun to be jointly in someone’s heart and mind. Like John Lennon song (I Am The Walrus) “I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together” .

How would you say these collaborations help you grow as an artist yourself?

When its magic the outcome is unexpecting and expecting at the same time and this makes a complete piece of work where you able to see and hear from another’s view whereas when done by yourself you view it from your own mind and soul solely. Writing is like a puzzle you have all these pieces and you need to make them work together. What I find when you work with others you can take the best pieces and place them better at times where you would not. Though many great works have been written alone and I have written many songs without collaborators. I have also had the pleasure of writing melodies and lyrics were done in German, Spanish such as Marta Sánchez – “Desesperada” which was a huge hit in Spanish.

Having worked with some many big names and getting so much momentum – do you feel any pressure or rather the opposite?

This gives you wings so you can fly even better and reach higher heights then normally you would achieve.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Have some new singles in the works such as one with a feat of Kendrick Lamar & Glasses Malone and other new derivations with other famous copyrights and classics.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Working on this hopefully no later than the September.

Any plans to hit the road?

All this in the planning stage!

What else is happening next in Lotus’ world?

Working on some cool remixes and features with some huge stars! More will be revealed soon. Stay tuned!
