Hi Josh, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been really well, thank you.

Can you talk to us more about your new single “Bad Things”?

Yes! I’m so excited for you guys to hear it.

Did any event, in particular, inspire you to write this song?

I wrote the song based on one of my past relationships. It was pretty toxic, but when you’re in love you only see the good: even the bad things I’d somehow justify and make excuses for. Actually, I got so comfortable with the bad aspects that they became my normal.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes. We start production on the video very soon.

How was the recording and writing process?

This song was a collaboration with Bart Schoudel. We would normally start out by writing a chord progression on the guitar or piano and then add the melody and lyrics. Once we got every part of the song, we went to the studio and produced it.

What was it like to work with Bart Schoudel and how did that relationship develop?

It is always so much fun working with Bart. We met via social media. I was looking for a producer and really liked what I was hearing from him, so I reached out. He’s not just my producer but also a great friend of mine now, so we always have a good time. It’s really when you’re having fun and enjoying yourself that the best music comes.

How much did he get to influence the song?

Bart influenced the song a great deal. It was a true collaboration between the two of us.

What role does LA play in your music?

I think LA has played and continues to play a role in my music. Had I not moved here, I wouldn’t have met the people I have or had certain opportunities presented to me.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than working on your own?

The approach is always different when you’re working alone versus with someone. When collaborating, you have to be open to ideas and ways of doing things that might be a little different than you’re used to, but that’s what makes collaborations so cool. You get to see things through someone else’s perspective. And if you’re open to it, sometimes you come together and make something amazing.

How has your upbringing influenced your writing?

My upbringing definitely made me a better writer because I was surrounded by songwriting. My mother was a writer, so I started writing songs around age 5. My mother, brother and I would sit around for hours writing songs together. I dealt a lot with bullying growing up and songwriting was my way of feeling like I had a purpose. It was also my way of letting out my feelings.  It’s through writing and singing that I found my confidence.

Does the new single mean we can expect new material – how’s that coming along?

It’s going really well. This first single is one of 6 songs that will be released on my EP coming out end of this year, so stay tuned because there is more to come.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I think the EP will be released around October or November. I have some ideas for the title, but we will see.

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes. I will definitely be hitting the road to tour after we finish the EP.

What else is happening in Josh Olsen’s world?

Music is taking over my life right now in a good way. I am growing every day, working hard,  and so excited about what’s to come.
