INTERVIEW: Microcosms

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Forget Us”? Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

“Forget Us” is inspired by the countless scandals we learn about every day, the ones propagated by people who use fear to wield their power or to distract from the truth. It seems like every time I open up Twitter to catch up on the world, I can hear this song reverberating in my head.

What made you want to go for this deep theme?

It’s kinda all I think about haha…I try and keep from getting too worked up all the time but I feel like that’s what they want us to do!

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes there are two videos out right now – my friend Ronn Richardson made a music video that mashes up some studio footage with a live performance of the song, and we also have a lyric video made by Father Darko.

How was the recording and writing process? Did you encounter any challenges wring this amazing single?

I had written the lyrics for the verses and pre-choruses over the past couple years, but originally thought they were going to be used for separate songs. Then one day I got that guitar riff stuck in my head, and this chorus just flowed out and I loved it. When I went back to my library of lyrics to see if anything jived with this new chorus, I found those old lyrics and thought they fit really well. We recorded “Forget Us” here in Chicago at Command Space Audio with Daniel Salcido. It was a great experience and we really enjoyed working with him and hearing his ideas for the track.

What role does Chicago play in your music, if any?

There’s so much amazing music coming out of Chicago right now, it’s awesome. I swear every band we play with is great and unique and it really pushes us. I’ve only lived in Chicago since 2012, but it’s been so fun meeting all these other artists and watching them grow with us.

Does the new single mean we can expect new material? Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Yep we’re heading into the studio towards the end of the month to record another couple songs. Right now I’m thinking we’ll probably release them as standalone singles but not sure yet. But we’ll definitely have at least another two songs released before the end of the year.

Any plans to hit the road? What else is happening next in MICROCOSMS’ world?

We’re playing our first out of state shows this summer, 6/16 in Milwaukee at Bremen Cafe and a couple additional dates in August that aren’t quite confirmed yet. We also have a few shows in Chicago coming up – 6/15 at Short Fuse Brewery for their anniversary party, 6/26 at Emporium, and 7/13 at Cubby Bear.
