Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Erika – Hey there! We’re awesome! Thanks for having us! Super busy but that’s always a good thing!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Your Touch”?
Dee – Your touch is our funky collaboration with fellow funk group Mink Slide whom we’ve done music with before. We wanted to create a smooth groove that mixed the 70s and 80s sounds together to create something fresh. Our whole goal is to keep real authentic funk alive!
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Erika – This song is co-written by Tariq Nasheed lead singer for Mink Slide and we just wanted to have something smooth and fun for all the players out there!
The single comes off your new album Amplified Experiment – what’s the story behind the title?
Erika – Amplified Experiment is what “The A.P.X.” is short for. We decided to have the album self-titled to focus more on who we are as a duo. Amplified Experiment has a few different meanings. The fact that we’re experimenting with different styles of funk and combining them to make new but familiar sounds. We’re always striving to be our best selves both musically and personally, so the amplification of the musical personification is always the core goal whenever we’re creating.
How was the recording and writing process?
Dee – Everything (vocals and mixing) was done at our Acworth home with love. Our home is our most creative space and where we’re the most comfortable. I really feel like that translates in our music whenever we’re able to create from home. Most of our records are made late at night because during the days we’re usually doing paperwork and sending emails as we’re a 100% self operated band.
What role does Detroit play in your music?
Erika – Being born and raised in motor city I can confidently say that Detroit IS music. The soul, the culture, the people. Everything about the D is in my blood and I think it translates thru my voice into our sound.
How do you get to balance your classic roots with the much modern influences?
Dee – That’s easy, we don’t. We always try to stay as close to the synth soul sound that we love and we love house music. So whenever we can get a chance to mix house and funk music together to create an infectious groove, we will.
You also get to toy with different genres – what was it like the selection process for what genre to mostly focus on and how to blend them?
Erika – Yes we LOVE synthwave, Vaporwave and Lo-fi and eventually we will start creating sounds like that but in our own style soon. Picking funk as our genre all came from seeing a hole in music where not alot of artist do funk. Since we’re listening to funk all day at home, it was only natural that we went that direction.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
Dee – Most of the time, our inspiration comes from traveling and taking road trips. We often fly to California just to see the mountains and open roads and we’ll just vent all day long. Those will usually turn into songs.
Any plans to hit the road?
Erika – Yes we’re going on the Amplified Experiment world tour starting June 5th in which we’ll hit major cities in Europe and USA!
What else is happening next in The APX’s world?
Dee – We are getting ready to venture out and start writing and producing for other artists. The funk is too strong not to be shared! Stay Funky!
