Morrissey Releases ‘California Son’ Following Acclaimed Broadway Run

Today Morrissey is releasing his much-anticipated twelfth studio album California Son(Étienne Records/BMG). The collection of 60/70s covers sees the Britpop icon put his incomparable spin on trailblazers like Joni Mitchell (“Don’t Interrupt the Sorrow”) andBob Dylan (“Only a Pawn In Their Game”) as well as more obscure figures like early gay icon Jobriath (“Morning Starship”) and political activist Phil Ochs (“Days of Decision”). Paying equal tribute to the marginalized stars as he does household names—and taking on these covers with features from modern alt-rock royalty including Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day), Ed Droste (Grizzly Bear), Sameer Gadhia (Young the Giant), and LP—the record encompasses a bridge between rock music’s past, present, and future.

In celebration of the release, a special limited-edition California Son “Ultimate M Box” bundle will be released. The deluxe merch set includes a California Son album vinyl, a “Wedding Bell Blues” 7′ vinyl, a limited-release Crosley Record Player, a celebratory pin, and a special-edition Morrissey shirt.

The record comes on the heels of Morrissey’s sold-out Broadway residency at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater in New York City, where he brought the jangly melancholia that has made him a household name to The Great White Way for seven critically-acclaimed nights. This fall, Morrissey will go on a U.S. tour in support of California Son with post-punk luminaries Interpol that spans both the East and West Coasts.
