INTERVIEW: Myoa

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “You?”

My latest single “YOU” was written from a personal yet universal place to represent the different people and situations that have crossed my life such as unhealthy relationships, negative people, dream stealers and opportunists;  how I overcame and was able to stay on top of adversity with a positive attitude.

It started with me on the keyboard and then a melody with words flowed out and I knew I wanted to write in that angle.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this?

I realized over the years that people tend to find it hard to get out of toxic relationships. I also had situations that felt negative with people either not believing in my journey, or being around me for what they felt they could get.

However, I have been clear about my career and personal goals, so that even with the negativity I have always chosen to rise above.  I decided to write a song about it to help others.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes, the video for “YOU” will be released on Friday May 31st.  I produced and co-directed the video myself with cinematographer Will Darosa in Los Angeles.

How was the recording and writing process?

It was pretty enjoyable and straightforward. The writing process happened in a day.

It started with me on the keyboard, and then a melody with words of the hook flowed and I knew I wanted to write in that angle. I then played it for my keyboardist in my band, Thanuhska and he liked it and helped me with chord placement. He also played the keys, cello and bass on the recording.  I then reached out to Cory Washington to engineer it, and I was in awe with the final product.

What made you want to touch on such a hot topic?

I have encountered toxic people both in my personal life and my career and I knew that other people have to.

I love to write personal yet universal songs so I knew if I could inspire others to rise above and let go of such relationships in their lives or career we can all be winners!

We should all strive for positive energy and you can do that by not being negative yourself and shining a light to those around you.

How did you get to balance the inherent darkness of the topic with the much uplifting tone?

The end goal and desired outcome made me do that. Which is a winner’s attitude!

You can always tame darkness with a bright light, so I chose a melody and instrumentation that is easy on the ears and feeds the soul and then let the lyrics do the heavy lifting.

The video also feeds well into this concept.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes I have completed my album called Beautiful Journey, which I got to co-produce and co-write some of the songs with amazing producers and writers.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

I plan to release another single after “YOU,” followed by my album, Beautiful Journey will be released later this year.

What other aspects of humanity will you get to explore on this record?

I talk about: The hope of love and not giving up, being the best at what you do no matter what it is, the ups and downs of life–which eventually become your beautiful journey–my faith and the journey of my faith, and the process of achieving a goal.

Any plans to hit the road?

I love to perform, I am constantly performing with my band. I love being on stage and sharing my music with people.

There are plans to go on a local and national tour even in Africa in the very near future.

What else is happening  in Myoa’s world?

I am also an actor and have booked a few acting gigs which I continue to alongside my music.I am also a Mac Cosmetics Tour Endorsed Artist. I am constantly writing songs and enjoy co-writing as well. I am already writing new songs for my second album.
