INTERVIEW: London-based duo Yun Sen

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi, thank you for having us. It’s been pretty good. We just release our third official single “All I Have” and have been working on the song and the video in the last couple months. We have been working really hard for YUN SEN for quite a long time since 2017, and it feels like now it’s time to show everyone what we got.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “All I Have”?

Of Course! It’s our third official single released on April 12th 2019. I’s a song about letting it go and getting the courage to get out of the old self and dark situation. Most of our songs are quite fast tempo but this one is an exception. We wanted to add some dark, atmospheric feelings into this song, that’s why we used a lot of hard hitting drums and harmonies. It actually feels like a spiritual journey from dark to bright, because we also wanted to leave hope as well as the bright colour at the end of the song.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

This is really interesting. I (Aflou) actually wrote the final lyrics and melodies right after I watched one of my favourite shows “the Handmaids’ Tale”. The dark vibe in the show and the touching story of those characters really inspired me to write down “I will give you all I have I have because I will grow a new moon in me” while I was thinking that all the girls are going to escape to Canada. It’s an amazing show and reflected in reality in many ways, you should watch it!

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

We were lucky enough to get funded by MOBO team and Help Musicians last year as “One of the exceptional emerging artists”, and we took this chance to go to Switzerland to shoot this video. We wanted to shoot in a place that has a cold feeling (Laugh), we just felt like Switzerland could fit in really great with this song. This is also the first official music video of us, the process was tiring but also full of fun, we were so fortunate to be surrounded by many amazing friends, shout out to Eva, Sophie, Remi and Melissa, they worked super hard from sunrise till sunset for 2 days, we couldn’t do this without them. We also made some Behind the Scenes videos we will release along the video, so keep your eyes peeled.

How was the recording and writing process?

Wako made those hard hitting toms and piano bass and set the mood of the song first, and I wrote top lines and arranged the vocals. I actually wrote different toplines in the beginning, and then changed it as the process went on. The recording process was completely done in our bedrooms just like what lots of electronic artists do. The song actually came quite smoothly as we knew what direction we were going to.

What role does London play in your music?

I mean we met in our uni in London, write music in our caves in west London, haha. London could be overwhelming sometimes but we learnt and grew a lot here, explored our music as well as our own life here. It brought a lot of challenges but also loving and warm experience. We had our first show in London, support SOLA ROSA in London, released our music in London, London is where we start and grow.

How did you get to balance the dark aspects of the song with the much brighter tones?

We want to leave hopes and courage in people after they listen to this song, and that’s why we wanted to set a bigger picture in the last section by using brighter synth sounds, warmer piano sound. The same as the lyrics, “nothing is the same, but I’m ready to face it all”. This song is from a dark place, but also a dance at the altar.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

We actually made quite some new materials already and can’t wait to show more to everyone. We are still working on them at this moment.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

It should be around the end of this year or early next year.

Any plans to hit the road?

We haven’t had any plans to tour yet because we have been developing our music in the room and trying to build the traction first. But we love live shows and really can’t wait to perform those songs live, so stay tuned!

What else is happening next in Yun Sen’s world?

After releasing this music video, we will move on to our first EP which we are excited about. Wako might move to Europe to explore some new life but YUN SEN will still be there and keep releasing materials.
