INTERVIEW: Jayden McGrath

Hi Jayden, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I am great! Thanks for having me!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Conditions”?

‘Conditions’ is a starting point from where my life began to change. During this period of my life,  I was having a really hard time and there were a lot of major changed taking place. I really fell back on music as therapy and started to write very true, from the heart songs, which is something I had never done before and this was one of the first to take shape!

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

The song really focuses on how I felt so disconnected with the world at the time. I was in a very negative mindset but would always try to bring out positives to keep my hopes up. This came across in the lyrics being fairly morbid, however I wanted the melodies to have a sense of hope.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

The basic concept of the video was thought up by myself however, I really needed someone to help me complete the idea and bring it to life. I had done videos with Dave Hunter in the past so it was natural for me to sit down with him and work this one out together. After a few chats, we introduced a few plot twists and animation ideas that really ended up “making” the clip. The Emoji animations were drawn by a friend of mine, Joey Klarenbeek and all of the other animations were done by Dave.  I’m really happy with the way it turned out and look forward to the next one!

How was the recording and writing process?

It was a great experience for me! This is the first time that I have taken on recording tracks as a whole, from top to bottom. It took me a while to construct and get my head around Ableton, but once I did I found that it was so inspiring to have every instrument that I could ever want at my fingertips! I ended up re-recording the guitar and vocals at sing sing recording studios with Luke Concetta.

What role does Melbourne play in your music?

Melbourne was very hard to get used to for me. Coming from the small town of Alice Springs and moving here on my own when I was 18, it was very hard to digest. Life is faster here, there are more people and with that comes more opportunity with more competition. I honestly struggled to fit in for a while and I think this had a huge impact in my writing.

How do you go on balancing the dark elements of your music with the much uplifting ones?

It’s hard for me to say I meant for there to be balance. I really like to write true to where a song is taking me. Some songs are rather dark from start to finish, which seems to portray that meaning perfectly. Others have a hint of light which means at the time there was a glimpse of hope.

What is it about this dichotomy that you find so fascinating?

There are no limits, anything can be imagined and described with as much or little detail as possible. It can be fact or fiction, light or dark, you choose. I love being able to toy with words to conjure emotion and forever learn more and more about storytelling and the life we live.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than working on your own?

I always try to remain myself and put the best representation of myself forward. I do believe that I cater well to different styles so when I am writing with someone the approach varies depending on what they are all about.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

YES! I’m really excited to show everyone the body of work I have created! Different vibes and genres from different times and emotions! All in good time!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

No dates yet, we will be following up with single releases soon though!

What aspect of humanity will you get to explore on this record?

Honestly at this point in my life I’m writing a lot from the heart about personal circumstance that has formed me into the person I am today. Relationships, love, meditation, spirituality, drugs and out of body experiences name a few subjects.

Any plans to hit the road?

We are hoping to hit the road as soon as possible but are very excited and concentrated on the show coming up in Melbourne first!

What else is happening next in Jayden McGrath’s world?

Hopefully more of the same! I’m so lucky to be where I am today. Living , experiencing, learning. I will be releasing more music soon and you better believe that it will all be different!
