Hi Marblmoon, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hello, I’m very well thank you! Just recovering from a crazy week of ‘debut EP launch’ Staying hydrated and all that.
Can you talk to us more about your latest EP ‘Glitter & Gold’?
Of course! It has been over two years in the making, if you count the song writing process. It was something I had to make. It’s about growth and realisation, I can feel myself growing up in the songs. I wanted it to sound naïve because this is just the beginning, I have so much more to bring. I think this EP has really helped me start to discover my sound, people have described it as ‘dreamy’ and ‘atmospheric’ which I love.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this EP?
I’m a heavy romantic, as you can probably hear from my lyrics. Things happen, I write about them. That’s how I cope. I was actually travelling alone whilst writing most of these songs, which caused me to look inward much more than usual and the things I found, I wrote down.
How was the recording and writing process?
I tend to write lyrics first. I have a notes section on my phone filled with words, phrases and dreams. Just anything that pops in my head, it goes there. I then get my guitar and add chords to it. Most of the EP was written just lyrics first because I was travelling a lot, I actually found a ukulele in a place I was staying once and borrowed it to work out the chords for ‘Hindsight’ I was so desperate to get some kind of melody down. Once I was back home I met my producer and we instantly clicked, he understood the vision and the whole vibe I was trying to portray. Recording was a dream, I had so much fun experimenting with different instruments, something I’d never been able to do before.
What else is happening in Marblmoon’s world?
I have lots of gigs coming up with my new band, which I’m so excited about. We’re playing lots of local festivals this summer, the big one being Kendal Calling. I can’t wait to throw on my glitter and dance in the fields. Other than that I’m just writing constantly and working on some very exciting projects (I’ve always wanted to be that guy)
Who is your musical inspiration?
I’m inspired by the likes of Stevie Nicks, Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin, Aretha, Carole King.. too many to mention! Strong women who stood up for their music and what they believe in and what they went through. They can break hearts in less than three lyrics, make you dance around your kitchen like a fool and completely immerse you, I want to be like that.
What song do you have on repeat?
That’s too hard! Let’s have a look at today; we’ve got Perfume Genius who I’ve just discovered and adore, their song ‘Alan’ made me cry on the bus this morning. If I had to choose one song to loop all night it would be ‘Gypsy’ by Fleetwood Mac aahh that was difficult!
What do you like about the music scene in the UK?
I love honest song writing and I think the UK does that really well. I think we have a whole culture which is completely built from music and it makes me proud to be a tiny part of it. I also love festivals, nothing beats playing a UK festival with a mental crowd and a free falafel wrap at the end of your set!
Does the new EP mean we can expect new material in 2019?
Let’s just say I’m writing things that might become single releases in the not too distant future
If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be and why?
Florence Welch, we’re star-crossed-sisters and I adore her. Also production wise, I’d love to work with Jack Antanoff, he just sprinkles some kind of magic onto a song and makes it come to life, I want to find out what that is!
