A bit worse for wear as we started the year on tour with The Streets which was the maddest January ever and that theme has pretty much continued for the rest of the year so far.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “For Life“?
It’s a feel good song about appreciating your mates and it’s definitely one for the summer pool party or barbecue vibes.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Most of the songs on the new EP were written about difficult situations we’ve either faced in the past or were going through at the time. For Life has an equally poignant message but it comes from a more positive angle.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
The video has doubled up as a pilot/trailer for a new reality series we’ve got coming up called ’Made In The Manor’ check it out on YouTube!
The single comes off your new album Free The Geezer – what’s the story behind the title?
It’s all about being yourself, speaking your mind and being happy.
How was the recording and writing process?
It was one of the most natural bits of work we’ve ever done. The whole thing was produced by Yanaku who did a lot of our early stuff, which definitely helped make the whole process very organic.
Would you call this your most personal record to date?
Most of our music has always been quite personal and honest. This project has probably been the most introspective in its entirety though, yeah.
What role does London play in your music?
You can’t really place our music into a genre. The best way to describe it is that its very London, or more specifically very South London. We all grew up in the same area but come from very different cultural backgrounds, as do a lot of our mates, so our music is pretty much a representation of our life experiences to date growing up in our local area.
What aspect of your own lives did you get to explore on this record?
Everything from addiction to break ups to depression to celebrating friendships. Generally trying to live the weddings the same way we live the funerals.
Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
Other than life experience the other big inspiration is other music.
Any plans to hit the road?
We’re currently planning a regional UK tour and a massive headliner. Can’t give too much more away but can confirm it will be absolutely mental.
What else is happening next in The Manor’s world?
We’ve just released the Free The Geezer podcast to run alongside the EP. There’s only so much you can say on a 3 minute song so we’ve got 6 45 min podcast episodes featuring some amazing special guests on which we cover everything from social media and body image to debt and consumerism to drink drugs and having it large.
