INTERVIEW: Josh Christina

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Let’s Get Woke“?

“Lets Get Woke” is a piano driven rock and roll song that, in short, is about having a good time. The song was inspired by the styles of Jerry Lee Lewis and Elton John. Its about a guy who’s had a long week and is looking forward to the weekend and letting loose a bit, going out and having a good time with his friends. He’s the life of the party and wants to get everyone tuned in or “Woke” about the party scene.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

Not really. I had been hearing the term “Woke” a lot on TV and in groups of friends. The term has so many different meanings, which I think a few could apply with this song, and i just thought it be cool to write a fun party song using the word.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes! We’re looking at releasing a video around the first week in June. Its the first real music video shoot I’ve ever done and it came out great! Really excited for everyone to see it!

How was the recording and writing process?

The recording process was great! I had the pleasure of working with producer Jordan Lake from Nashville Hit Machine. He really dove into the sonics and guts of the recording, pulling influences from Elton John records and mixing them with some modern vibes for the mixing and mastering process. Writing was actually very similar. I pulled from a lot of my influences, as usual, for the song. The artist that got me into writing was Chuck Berry and I definitely think you can hear some of that in the song.

What role does Nashville play in your music?

I’d say Nashville and Memphis both play a role in my music. I have influences from both. From Memphis, I was influenced by guys like Elvis Presley and BB King, where as Nashville I was influenced by the sounds of George Jones or Alan Jacksons song writing styles.

How do you go on balancing your classic background with your much modern influences?

I usually pull from my classic background for feeling and the way the song overall sounds. My modern influences help me with the writing style a lot. I try to write like how I think guys like Chuck Berry would write music today. We’re definitely talking different and have different topics to discuss then they did in 1955 so I try to combine old with new.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

I definitely would say that there will be more new music coming soon. I have other stuff written, which I can’t wait for everyone to hear, but right now i’m focussing on the current single and taking things as they come.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Maybe. I like to keep that stuff close until the time comes.

Any plans to hit the road?

For sure! I’m always playing and traveling somewhere for music so the road is always something I look forward to.

What else is happening next in Josh Christina’s world?

You’ll have to wait and see! Sometimes I don’t even know. I can definitely see a follow up single after “Let’s Get Woke” but after that who knows. I’m looking forward to what else is come and I think 2019 is gonna be a good year.
