As we wrap up another premiere week, we are teaming up with Richard James Simpson once again for the release of his new single “Mary Shoots ‘Em First,” the fifth track off his sophomore solo album “Deep Dream.” It was produced by Indie Music Channel production-nominee Paul Roessler (member of the legendary band The Screamers, Nina Hagen, and Gitane Demone Quartet), with imperial, roaring drumming from Don Bolles of The Germs.
The song is named after an indigenous woman who fought to retain her land by fending off viscous attacks by settlers. The video embraces the thread that runs through all resisters of tyranny and the diseases of war, violence and injustice. The theme of the song and video suggests there is a spirit thread that joins us all as one – the fire spirit. Fire spirits are associated with the element fire in all its forms, as well as with the spark of life within all things. The fire spirit is represented by a perse thread that joins humankind in the quest for justice.
In the contemplative words of Nobel-peace-prize nominee Julian Assange, “Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence and thereby eventually lose all ability to defend ourselves and those we love.” “Mary Shoots ‘Em First” honors our brothers and sisters who fight injustice no matter what form it takes.
