INTERVIEW: Tara Flanagan

Hi Tara, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi VENTS! I’ve been great thank you, I hope you have too!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Doing My Best”?

Of course, ‘Doing My Best’ is a song I wrote about feeling strong, confident and happy in yourself. It’s about focusing on what’s important to better yourself and not letting any negative thoughts or feelings bring you down. It’s about finally feeling like you’re moving forward and bossing it riding solo.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

So if you know me, you know I love a sad song and I tend to write a lot of sad songs! But I felt like it got to a time where I felt like I wanted to write something happy and positive! I was inspired by my friends and family. Previously, I had been going through an emotional ride for several months but with their support and many pep-talks, I finally got to a place where I felt confident and positive in myself again. The whole essence of the song is to not hold onto any bitterness or negativity so that you can use all your energy to focus on the best ‘you’ that you can. I want this to be an anthem that everyone can relate to and blast out loud and proud!

Any plans to release a video for the single?

I am actually working on some exciting visuals for this single! I am especially excited as the whole team I’m working with are female and this song has female empowerment as a strong theme. I feel extremely inspired by the hardworking lady bosses around me who are so passionate in what they do. I’m also getting some of my best mates in on the video. I cannot wait!

How was the recording and writing process?

‘Doing My Best’ started on my piano at home! I started with the chorus, hitting the chords in a bouncy style and when I started singing whilst playing, I knew I wanted the bass line to be a strong feature in the song. I took it to the awesome producer, Harrison Perks from HP Music and we had an absolute blast playing around with different synths to create the full pop track.

What role does Bournemouth play in your music?

I absolutely love living by the sea. I’ve grown up here so I feel that living here has had a big influence on my music.  There’s something about the beach air that inspires you to be creative! I always found that when I was away from home for anything, whether it be uni, a session in London or a gig, it always felt so refreshing to come back home to re-boot. I’m also lucky to live in a place where everyone is so supportive of each other.

How did Dua Lipa and Florence + The Machine get to influence the writing on this song?

Dua Lipa I feel is just such a badass strong female in Pop Music. I love how honest she is with her lyrics and how she represents strong women in Pop. Her strength in her songwriting especially inspired me. Florence Welch is equally as powerful. I love how free and expressive she is with her music. It inspired me to play around with different synth sounds as well as experiment with different vocal tones.

What is it about the 90s that you find so fascinating and you are hoping to capture with your music?

I’ve always been such a pop fanatic… and I have no shame! When I was younger, I was obsessed with Britney Spears, S Club 7 and the Spice Girls. I love how all of the songs from these artists were ones you could dance around and belt out to the top of your lungs! I love how 90’s pop music gets everyone dancing and singing along together and I hoped to capture this same feeling with my song.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along? Any tentative release date or title in mind?

You sure can! I’ve been writing and recording a lot over the past 12 months. I have another song that I’m aiming to release this Summer and then hopefully an EP soon… stay tuned for more info 😉

Any plans to hit the road?

I would absolutely LOVE to! As an artist, one of my biggest dreams is to tour – top of my bucket list! Hopefully I can get the opportunity to some day soon.

What else is happening next in Tara Flanagan’s world?

You can expect the video for ‘Doing My Best’ very soon! I’m also in the preparation stages for a headline hometown show in Bournemouth this Summer. Keep an eye on my socials for more info! At the moment, I’m feeling so grateful for the support with my music. It feels so good to have this song out there and I’m so happy with the response so far! Thank you so much to everyone who’s been listening to it!  As a completely independent artist, sometimes this journey can feel extremely difficult and exhausting, what makes it worth while is seeing people enjoy and connect with my music! The support is amazing and I feel so grateful.
