After racking up millions of Spotify streams with her earlier material, including this year’s singles “Electric Heights” and “Glide Dog”, UK singer-songwriter Phildel is unveiling the gorgeously dynamic “Oh Love” ahead of her long-awaited album release. Long known for her emotionally cutting lyrics, Phildel takes perhaps her deepest plunge yet in the track mixed by Andrew Scheps (Adele, Hozier, Lady Gaga). She explains that the track is about“the power of love to give us the resilience we need to deal with the most difficult things life throws our way.”
In perhaps a more unexpected turn, the video concept is inspired by an issue close to Phildel’s heart as a mother of two young boys – toxic masculinity and the prevalence of male suicide. “Isolation becomes a massive part of the problem as men feel unable to be their authentic emotional selves around others. We need to work hard to turn around this damaging, emotionally repressive messaging and show that men expressing their authentic feelings is absolutely welcome, valid, and represents a healthy way forward for the world,”she says.
Phildel spent the last three years makingWave Your Flags; a powerfully emotional 11-track album re-enacting cycles of loss and renewal. In the midst of the ‘#MeToo’ era, Phildel’s impending album is a body of work emphasizing the importance of speaking up and finding your way in the world. The last few years have been a crucial period of transience for Phildel and this is represented by the scale and adventure present throughout the new recordings, including the new single, “Oh Love.”
Phildel released her debut album The Disappearance Of The Girl in 2013, a dark and intimate suite of songs exploring the gothic fantasies that sustained her through an unhappy childhood. Though written in a vacuum, Phildel’s intense piano and electronica music quickly spread to millions, sound-tracking ads for Apple, Expedia and Burberry;she was an inspiration to Mariah Huehner, author of the True Blood comic series, and her songs featured in the live shows of fashion designer Henrietta Ludgate.
“Oh Love” is out now, and the full Wave Your Flags album will be released May 17.
