Kita Menari, the project of Dutch artist Micha de Jonge, resolves it first phase with new EPFinally Awake. Crafting a sound as vibrant as Passion Pit with the electronic hooks of MGMT and sonic energy of Parisian dance pop icons Phoenix, he has already started the year as one of its most exciting breakthrough artists.
On the new single Micha says:
“On the surface it’s about someone who has the feeling of being stuck and doesn’t know where to go. This protagonist meets someone and together they decide to get lost inside the night, to take a chance, to not over think things and say “let’s fucking go for it”! This moment won’t last forever so the song is about seizing it with full force. It’s about more than partying though, it’s about getting out of your comfort zone and taking a risk in the knowledge that you might discover something life changing.”
The joie de vivre apparent in Kita Menari’s sound has unexpected origins – it was born of a near death experience whilst scuba diving in Malaysia. The relief of surviving caused Micha to celebrate through the night, waking up in the morning with the Malay phrase ‘Kita Menari’ written on a piece of paper in his pocket. Translating to ‘We Dance’, it became both an artist name and musical mantra. It felt apt to use an image associated with this life-changing event as the artwork for the EP, and singles: “To me, the ocean stands for all the impulses life can give you: on one side itcan be calming, peaceful, serene. On the other it has the ability to drown you if the waters swell and you get sucked below the surface. I choose to chill with life now, go with the flow and see where it takes me.”
Kita Menari has had a string of success already in the Netherlands and his primary coloured 80s sounds are crossing into UK/US consciousness. In fact things kicked off for him at 100mph, having dropped just one single online he was picked up by the Netherlands biggest public radio station, and their debut performance came in front of more than one million people on popular Dutch TV-show De Wereld Draait Door, before a sold-out headline show at Paradiso in Amsterdam. These live successes resulted in Kita Menari being invited to play widely acclaimed sets at Europe’s key festival for emerging artists Eurosonic Noorderslag in January 2019.
