Hi! I am doing great. Been traveling quite a bit lately for music and currently enjoying the west coast of the United States out in California.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Chasin’ The Ace”?
“Chasin’ The Ace” serves as a great example of my new sound and it gives my fans a fun taste of what’s to come with my upcoming album.
The whole concept of “Chasin’ The Ace” has given me a clear purpose to “chase my goals, chase my music and chase my dream” and it has led me into an incredible journey of growth in my music and personal life!
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
“Chasin’ The Ace” was born when (my now great friend) Lynn Tessari and I were set up on a blind writing date. It was the first time we had ever met and due to us both being independent, strong-willed ladies, the lyrics, music and melody just flowed from us.
I honestly feel that we wrote the song in record time and we had a great time doing it! Lynn had originally had the title in her back pocket and something just stood out to me about the idea being sassy and fun. It was an epic morning of writing that day!
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
Filming the music video for “Chasin’ The Ace” was a blast!
It was my first-ever music video and it featured a bunch of amazing girl friends coming together to have a “Girls’ night out” which turns into me taking over a poker game and eventually performing a full-on show and everyone partying together. Now, come to think of it, that’s usually how a night out with me happens anyway!
Lexy Kadey directed and produced the video, which was awesome because she brought another female perspective to the overall project!
How was the recording and writing process?
The recording and writing process for “Chasin’ The Ace” was so much fun! I got to co-write the tune and then head into the studio to co-produce the song with the amazing Simon Gugala. It was a phenomenal experience! We had some crazy talented musicians in the studio who put their creative spins on it as well, so I’m very thankful for that.
What role does Nashville play in your music?
Nashville has played a very important role in my music. It has given me the drive and determination to pursue music as my livelihood and not just as a hobby. I dove right into the Nashville scene to really test myself as to whether I was going to sink or swim! There have definitely been moments that tested my skills but I’m happy to say that there’s much more swimming than sinking these days!
How do you go on balancing the pop with the Country and is it become something easier to pull off?
I genuinely write and perform music that feels good to me and it’s always straddled the Country and Pop genres. I like music that has a feeling to it but also has a groove. For me, marrying both genres together is a perfect fit!
What is nice these days about music is that there’s collaboration and more freedom to do what feels good, so as an artist, you no longer have to fit into a box. That’s exciting because it allows us creatives to not be restricted in what we truly want to create!
How’s your new album coming along?
The new album is coming along great! We’ve been in the studio over the past month working on pre-production and lining up sounds.
I really want each and every song to have its own personality on the record, so Simon and I are putting all those touches to make them special. I really can’t wait for everyone to hear what we’re working on. It’s got vibe, sass, heart and groove.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
At this moment, we’re allowing the recording process to go at its own pace, so we don’t want to rush anything. Once that’s complete, we’ll be announcing the official release date and title.
I promise that it’s going to be great!
Any plans to hit the road?
Right now, most of my plans involve the studio and finishing up recording. Although, I’m very excited to say that I have plans to travel to Toronto, Vancouver and Edmonton to promote my next single release due out this summer. A western Canadian tour is also in the works that will lead me into Canadian Country Music Week in September and I’m also putting together some connections in the UK to tour with my friend and number one songwriter, Phillip White.
What else is happening next in Mandy McMillan’s world?
I’m currently finishing up my travel out in California and enjoying the west coast. I just did a photoshoot in Phoenix, so I’m doing all the creative content for that now and gearing up for a busy summer!
