Written by songwriter and lead singer Kelly Wayne Conley, “Here It Comes” is an intimate exploration of the state of the world, current events, and how those events affect lives differently around the globe.
“I wrote the song from a place of personal anxiety—it’s something I feel all too often, especially when I make the mistake of logging in to social media or turning on the news,” Conley explains. “I guess it’s nothing new, but it seems like every single day there is a new story of civil unrest, gross injustice and military intervention. When I empathize with the innocent people living in the crossfire, my heart rate climbs. I mean, you have people, all around the world, with foreign military occupying their streets, gangs and terrorist organizations, bombing, shootings, riots…and while we see some terrible things here in the US as well, people, for the most part, are just carrying on about their business. We’re so numb to the violence…Ultimately, ‘Here It Comes’ is an observation about the ebb and flow of war and peace, anxiety and contentment, dissatisfaction and satisfaction. We’re all just rolling with the punches here, y’know?”
The video, which begins through the screen of an old fashioned television, is a powerful complement to the song’s lyrics while emphasizing the role of the media and its influence on our daily culture, including the anxiety it stirs up inside us. “The way we get our news has evolved, but it really started in the early days of radio, and I think more so with the early days of TV,” Conley points out. “Everything, everywhere became real to us, and that has its own set of pros and cons. We have the opportunity to foster understanding, empathy and solidarity with regular people around the world, but we’re also much more easily manipulated into passively supporting some really terrible things.”
“Here It Comes” is an extraction off Owen-Glass’s upcoming debut album The Rope & The Rabbit, which joins the duo—East Texas-born singer and songwriter Kelly Wayne Conley and guitar prodigy Cole Humphrey—with a masterclass band. The result: authentic, genuine stories brought to life through rich textured soundscapes flecked with the bold drive of rock, the heartfelt organic glory of Americana, and the powerful charge of gospel.
The Rope & The Rabbit is set for release on May 10, 2019.
