INTERVIEW: Brion Starr

Hi Brion, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Flying high in the California sunshine.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “The Heart Is A Loaded Gun”?

THIALG is an amalgam, a riddle, a plea.

Did any event in particular inspired you to write this song?

No, not one in particular. Actually, quite the opposite, it is more an stream of events that seems to have no end.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes, I’m actually on the way to the desert now with the wonderful Annette Lamothe-Ramos to make a video!

The single comes off your new album Global Identity – what’s the story behind the title?

Global Identity is a journey into the near future. At a moment of great change, not knowing if you are on the cusp of utopia or Eschaton. It might have already come.

How was the recording and writing process?

It was absolutely wonderful, we had a great time recording this album up in north London at Konk Studios. Originally home to one of my favorite bands, The Kinks. Big thanks to everyone up there. I won’t forget a single day, believe me.

Who influences your writing?

Mostly the people who directly surround me.

What role does NYC play in your music?

It is my environment and my looking glass to the rest of the world. NYC will always be home though I’ve become more of a Global Identity as of late.

How your acting background does influences your music and the other way around?

Well, I’m more of an everyday actor. I’ve been in a few small films and it is something I’m looking forward to exploring further.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

Musically there is an extensive list of inspiration, I’d feel instantly inaccurate if I tried to put it down to only a few. Lyrically, I write about what is around me.

How has the tour been with The Chills?

It was a really nice tour, they are such a lovely group of people. So thankful that they took us out with them on their triumphant return to the states.

Any plans to hit the road?

On the road now actually, in LA and by next week we will be in UK/EU. We are doing a limited number of shows for his album in major cities around the world.

What else is happening next in Brion Starr’s world?

We will be doing an immersive show in the 13th Street Repertory Theater in NYC for the album release, I’m really excited, it is a sit down theater. It is going to be a new kind of concert to explore the idea Global Identity properly to its fullest extent. I’m also working on a film and another album will be out by the years end.

Global Identity comes out on May 3rd in all the streaming platforms!
