INTERVIEW: Sal The Musician

Hi Sal, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey RJ! Not bad at all, been so busy over the last few weeks with the promotion of my debut single that I’ve barely had time to breathe! God’s been on my side though and it’s going super well!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “LOW”?

Well LOW is actually my debut single! It came out on the 29th of March and it has received a stellar response so far and I’m so grateful to God for that! It came out four months after dropping out of college and moving to Ireland. The plan is to build a solid platform and then God-willing, move on to my next piece of work!

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Well RJ about five months ago now, I dropped out of college and boarded a plane to Ireland without telling any of my family and friends, where God helped me start pursuing my dream of being a musician. Even though it had its moments, my college experience was not the greatest, and Low basically talks about my struggle with depression and suicidal thoughts.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

It has been in the works for while now, but we have hit so many roadblocks I really don’t know when we will actually see the music video. I hope God makes it happen soon enough because ideally I would want to release it before my second single comes out!

How was the recording and writing process?

Well I basically spent the first 3 months in Ireland writing my entire debut album with God’s help, and Low was one of the last songs I wrote. I write all my songs by picking a topic first, and then I try and simultaneously craft the lyrics and melody, which God helps me put together. I remember the melody just getting stuck in my head and then the song just came to me by God’s grace! The bridge at the end of the song was actually written quite a bit later. In terms of recording, God gave me the pleasure of working with Pete Duffy, an absolutely brilliant producer out of Galway. We spent two full days putting the song together and it was a treat! Can’t wait to work with him again God-willing!

What aspect of your life did you get to explore on this record?

Like I mentioned earlier, the song itself is about my struggle with depression and suicidal thoughts. I’d like to think that most of my music has a fairly deep meaning behind it, but Low is definitely one of the darker ones lyrically. My life wasn’t that bad I promise, God was very kind then too!

How much your struggles does has serve as a source of inspiration? How do you go on balancing the dark aspects with the much inspiring ones?

Well I feel like most songwriters take inspiration from their experiences and their struggles and I’d like to think that God allows people to connect more with their music because of that. With LOW, I wanted people to not just connect with my struggles, but also find inspiration and hope through the lyrics, especially the bridge. I hope God allowed me to do just that!

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Coming along really well thank God! God has already helped me write most of the music that we will hopefully get to see materialise very soon through His grace. A remix of LOW will be followed by my second single if it is in God’s will!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

An official remix for Low is being done by an Irish producer/DJ which we will hopefully see at the end of May, God-willing. Our second single, titled “FINE” is slated to come out in the middle of June, followed by our debut EP “BLISS” in August/September, all subject to God’s plan of course.

Any plans to hit the road?

Not at the moment RJ, God has helped me play a few open mics and singer-songwriter nights and such over the last couple weeks to promote LOW but no tour yet per-se. Can’t wait to see what gigs God has in store for me, but I doubt we will be seeing a proper tour until my debut EP. After which I definitely plan on touring, God-willing!

What else is happening next in Sal’s world?

At the moment, lots of work! But loads of interesting stuff is happening, and God-willing we will see plenty of gigs and new content in the near future! The best way to follow me and stay up-to-date is via my IG @salthemusician! Thank you so much for the interview RJ! Good luck and God bless you all.
