SINGLE REVIEW: Losing Game by Kanisha K

Singer/songwriter Kanisha K demonstrates a brilliant soft melodicism shaped into a brooding power ballad in her new single “Losing Game.” Co-written with the critically acclaimed Jane Bach, “Losing Game” sees Kanisha tapping into her skillset as a vocalist like never before, and dishing out some seriously evocative lyrics in the process. Sporting an elegant rhythm that slowly but surely traps us with its atmospheric glow, this is one pop song that doesn’t borrow too much from the status quo in forging a really lively, memorable hook. It’s a bold addition to her body of work, and much like its composers, it’s as original as they come.

The lyrical content here is hard-hitting, sharp, and delivered with a lot of swagger on the part of Kanisha that stops just shy of arrogance in what can only be described as a truly relaxed, confident performance for the ages. She sounds so incredibly comfortable in the booth here, laying down one lush string of words after another against a focused musical backdrop that is as crushing as it is gorgeous cosmetically. Not a lot of pop singers put as much effort into their songcraft as she does, but I suppose that’s just one of the many reasons why her sound stands out as much as it does.

“Losing Game” is built on the foundation of a really playful string arrangement that breaks up the tension of the lumbering tempo once we enter the powerhouse chorus. There’s so much emotion here, and a good-sized chunk of it is emitted from these graceful guitar parts that have an almost folk-rock inspired tonality reminiscent of the past and realized in modern day high definition audio. I like that there’s some contrast between the percussive parts and the bassline; it sets the tone for the lyrics wonderfully, and creates a catharsis in the chorus that simply wouldn’t be there otherwise.

In the first stanza, the harmony that Kanisha and the backing band cultivate is so crisp and natural, and in this superbly clean master mix, it sounds just as potent as it would in a live setting. I haven’t seen her on stage yet, but this track gives me a pretty good idea of what I could expect in an up-close and personal performance. She’s got a dynamic presence that lends a cinematic quality to every verse she sings, and while there’s no shortage of genuine talent making music in 2019, Kanisha K is quite possibly the most unique to emerge from her scene thus far.

A swinging single from an artist with a lot of crossover appeal, “Losing Game” is a marvelous acquisition for serious music enthusiasts and casual pop fans alike. With all of the buzz that she’s been attracting lately, Kanisha K is on the verge of taking her brand to the next level, but I don’t get the impression that she plans on abandoning her present set of ideals once she attains the spotlight that she’s chasing after. She’s the real deal, and she proves as much in songs like this one.
