“Circles is a song written about getting lost in the familiarity of a failing relationship” expresses Ella Walker, the singer-songwriter behind the WILDES project. Circles, along with her future releases follows a series of retrospective observations. In this case she explains “It’s far easier to go through the motions than to admit to yourself that you are unhappy, so you continue, avoiding confrontation and living on the boundaries of that relationship. Something that was once beautiful becomes ugly, warped and toxic.”
WILDES is planning to release her first record later in the fall, that give attention to the imperfect beauty in the world around us. It’s partly worts-and-all, but it’s also a celebration of our innate condition. Neatly put by herself “These songs are a study on relationships – of my own, of my friends and loved ones. The emotional turmoil that goes hand in hand with any investment of the heart; the addiction, the fear, but also the lessons we learn and the love we receive along the way. Through writing, I ended up examining my own feelings, my irrationality and my friendships“
A chunk of the songs on her record will include WILDES’ collaborative experiences with award winning producer Catherine Marks, who’s production discography includes cuts with Foals, Wolf Alice, Manchester Orchestra and The Killers to name but a few. WILDES explains the two’s alignment as “We were listening to a lot of music from the 60’s and 70’s – groups like Jefferson Airplane, The Supremes, Buffalo Springfield, solo artists including Dusty Springfield, Bowie and the more psych-pop influences of Harumi, Donovan and Tame Impala. Creating soundscapes that referenced elements of this music was our goal, which combined with my slightly more pop/folk writing was tricky at times but certainly very rewarding”.
Tickets go on sale shortly (Apr 22) for her headline London show on June 3rd @ Servant Jazz Quarter.
