Thanks for having us! Busy with all the PR and tour prep we’ve been doing.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Time”?
Time is all about getting older, that feeling of things changing and you’re powerless to stop it and coming to terms that you are at a different stage of life now.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Yeah, Chris was walking from his Mam’s house and he noticed that the tree that he and his friends used to climb as a child had been taken down to build houses.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
This was our first video as a band so it was interesting! We weren’t originally planning on releasing a video with time, but Nick and Chris had been talking about the possibility so they sat down with Nathan Richard’s who has been working with us on our videos to explain the ideas they had been brain storming for the video. After talking with Nathan they felt it would be a good debut song and video for the band. Nathan was a super guy and made the whole process smooth for us so we can’t thank him enough for that! We’re very pleased with the result and hope everyone enjoys it.
The single comes off your new album Ouroboros – what’s the story behind the title?
Chris and Matt liked the idea of rebirth, a Phoenix from the ashes, yin and yang, a snake eating it’s own tail, the Ouroboros, Chris was the only remaining original member of Digits, Chris brought Will and Nick in to replace old members and by the time we recruited Matt the music had changed and we felt that we should drop the old band name that we had been using and release the songs we had been working on as Ruled by Raptors so it’s entirely symbolic.
How was the recording and writing process?
Writing came about in lots of ways, songs that took 2 days and others that took many rewrites to get the results we wanted. The recording process was difficult and ran into turbulence with the death of Matt’s dad during that time, which was obviously a big trauma for Matt and we all tried to help Matt through that time. We also fell behind with art work for singles and the EP due to Chris’ aunt and God mother passing away. We got there in the end but it wasn’t an easy process for any of us so it’s something we’re all very proud of it.
After three records – what made you want to finally go on a whole different direction?
Truthfully Digits wasn’t us, Will and Nick were brought in to replace old members and eventually the band split up, we wanted to keep going so brought Matt in, and soon realised that we were a different band now in terms how we approach writing and the way the songs were sounding.
How Biffy Clyro and Reuben has influence your writing?
The attitude, the ethos, we take our hard edged pop sensibilities from Biffy Clyro, we take our chaotic approach to song structures from Reuben.
What role does the UK play in your music?
British politics and cynicism really play an important part in our song writing, we also really appreciate the way the UK accepts and appreciates multi genre bill’s, it’s really helped us grow both inside and outside of Ruled by Raptors
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
Whatever is on our minds at the time, usually the music comes first and we write words around it, but that doesn’t mean the lyrics come second, sometimes we can spend weeks or months on lyrics.
Any plans to hit the road?
We’re on tour with MC Lars currently and plan on going back out in the road once we’ve had a short writing break.
What else is happening next in Ruled by Raptors’ world?
Our EP is out 7th June, with our second single out mid-May, which conveniently coincides with Chris taking some time off for the birth of his second child. This will all come alongside a month or two of intense song writing and recording for us after this UK tour, hopefully we’ll have something to show everyone this time next year!
