INTERVIEW: Bagarre

Hi Mus, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey, life is good!  I’m very excited by what is coming out pretty soon!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Kabilyfornie”?

“Kabylifornia” is the imaginary country that combines my two cultures : Kabylie is a region in Algeria where my parents were born and California was my dream as a young skater and rocker. This song actually says : “take as I am”

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

My life ! I mean the way I grew up between two cultures. I’m French and Algerian at the same time and both are part of me. All my life I felt that i was in the middle of something. This song is a positive  answer to the question “Who I am?” and I am really happy to sing it now.

How was the filming process and experience behind the video?

The trip was an amazing experience ! I didn’t go to Algeria for a while so that was very moving. I realised two of my craziest dream : to have the luck to go with my new family “Bagarre” to visit my algerian family and also skate down the streets of Algiers with local skaters from “ALGERIA SKATEBOARDING “. Even if we went to Algeria to shoot the music video, the best footages that we made were just not planned : we actually didn’t plan anything precisely except going to the village of my family. We improvised a lot, we had to be very reactive and camera was always rolling… It was actually so beautiful to feel that the song was getting more real day after day during the shooting.

How was the recording and writing process?

The writing was actually quite fast because I wanted to talk about that issue since a long time. I talked of that idea of making a song about my double culture to the other members of Bagarre and they encouraged me a lot. Quickly, we started an Instumental and the text came quite fast !

What was it like to work with Vladimir Cauchemar and how did that relationship develop?

It was really an interesting collaboration ! We loved his sound and ideas and we thought that he could add something to this song that we were writing : he actually loved the sincerity of it and worked with us !

How much did he get to influence the song ?

Musically speaking it was a really interesting dialogue ! At the end we are all really found of that hybrid rock/trap/ oriental instrumental !

What role does Paris influences your music ?

The rythm of the city, its speedness, its nervosity has a huge influence on us and on our music ! Paris is a neurosis and an inspiration at the same time ! Its also now a very interesting city for music : you have a young rap and electronic  scene that is VERY good !

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes we are working on many songs in this period and we dont yet what form it will take !

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Not for the moment… surprise !

Any plans to hit the road?

Yeah we do have a lot of festivals this summer.

What else is happening next in Bagarre’s world?

A new CLUB is coming : Always more bass…
