Kaki King to Display BRUISES at Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial, + US Spring Tour Dates

After breaking in to the world of design and multimedia with her show The Neck is a Bridge to the Body, renowned composer and guitarist Kaki King has continued to expand her art in exciting, creative ways, bridging the worlds between music, visuals, data and more. Beginning May 10, the artist will be displaying her most recent innovative project at theCooper Hewitt Museum in New York City as part of their Design Triennial.

Designers are striving to transform people’s relationship with the natural world. “Nature—Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial,” co-organized by Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum and Cube design museum in Kerkrade, Netherlands, will feature over 60 projects to demonstrate how designers are collaborating with scientists, engineers, environmentalists, academics and other stakeholders to find inventive and promising solutions to the environmental and social challenges confronting humanity today. On viewMay 10–January 20, 2020, the Design Triennial will be presented at both Cooper Hewitt and Cube, allowing audiences in both the U.S. and Europe to experience the works simultaneously.

“‘Nature’ brings together some of the most creative and intelligent designers whose works address our complex relationship to nature and its precious resources and advocate for greater empathy for our planet,” says Caroline Baumann, director of Cooper Hewitt. The show  will feature BRUISES: The Data We Don’t See (2018), a collaboration between Kaki and data designer  / Data Humanist Giorgia Lupi. After Kaki’s daughter Cooper was diagnosed with an auto-immune disease, the artists turned to music, art and raw human data to track the emotional and physical impact of Cooper’s illness on the family, and to help bring a sense of clarity and calm to what was happening. The result was a beautiful catharsis that begs the question “Can a data visualization evoke empathy? Can looking at data through art make you feel part of a story of a human’s life?”

In addition to this display, Kaki will be taking her acoustic show on the road for select dates in the US – see below.
