Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Mystery Man”?
“Mystery Man” is an interesting song to me, I feel like it’s a unique track. It’s pretty simple though, which makes it cooler. It’s kinda minimalistic. I think the hook really reels the listener in so I’m excited to see what people think of it as it gets out there.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I wrote it really quickly, just started with the baseline and I actually sung/rapped the hook right on the spot. I do like practice sessions everyday at my apartment where I just try to make something new that I’m feeling in the moment. This song was spontaneous and I just really liked how it started so I decided to work on it more and get it mixed well.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
I definitely see a dope video for the song but I’m going to wait on that. Partly because I have a big idea for it so the budget would be high and I want to make sure people like it enough to actually want to see a real music video.
How was the recording and writing process?
I wrote most of it in one sitting and then finished within a couple days, but I actually re-recorded it at a friends place because they wanted to mix the song/help with the recording.
How do you go on balancing all your different influences and does the one lyrics’ theme lead you to focus on one genre in particular?
I listen to a ton of different music so I think I just pick and choose things in each genre that I relate to most and then put my own spin on it. Lyrics don’t really make me focus on a genre, I think if anything does it would be the beat. That’s what sets the tone.
What would you say have been the PROs and CONs of going fully DIY?
I can’t totally say since I’m a new artist in terms of putting my music out there. I would say that the pros are that you have full creative control/nobody to report to. For the cons I’d say it can be a bit more difficult to get opinions on what to release/get advice and guidance about the industry.
Does the new single mean we can expect more new material – how’s that coming along?
Definitely, I have a bunch of songs that are close to ready. I’m trying new sounds out with the production and playing around with my voice a lot too. Each song has it’s own story/feel and I’m confident that they’ll all be really good.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
I’m thinking that this reggae type track should go next in a few weeks or so.
Any plans to hit the road?
Definitely once I have more of a catalogue/people really tuned in to what I’m doing with the music.
What else is happening next in Justin Sanchez’s world?
I’m working on a bunch of different projects musically and am super excited overall. I actually have some stuff going on outside of music too. I have my clothing brand that I’m just starting up coming within a few weeks as well called Late Ninety. So lots of things coming, but actions speak louder than words so be on the lookout.
