Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Keep It Real”?
Keep It Real is a tune I started with my good friend, Dread MC, last summer and is being released on DJ Zinc’s Bingo Bass, which we are both thrilled about!
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I would say it had to be the session we had in my home studio – I just loaded up a shelved track I had been working on and with a battered microphone, a sieve for a pop shield and a maths workbook, Dread conjured up the main hook line. It got quite late and to avoid annoying the neighbours and me being evicted we decided to postpone the session, so we booked a room at Pirate Studios Bristol for 6AM the next day and the idea was born.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Not at the moment actually but I’m supporting him and My Nu Leng in Cheltenham at the end of this Month so a live PA could be rather fun…
How was the recording and writing process and what was it like to work with Dread MC?
Whenever Dread and I work together we do like to take our time to make sure it’s right. I think both tracks we have done have had to have multiple backing tracks haha. I think I speak for both of us when I say that quality will always outweigh quantity and a track that’s forced will show it.
Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than on your own?
Yes I would say so. I really enjoy collabs as you get to take a snippet of each artists style and make something really special. It allows you to be more creative and incorporate sounds and techniques you wouldn’t normally use.
As your popularity keeps growing – does that put any pressure on you or rather the opposite?
It’s interesting you would say that as I don’t really feel like my popularity is growing, I try to ignore all that side of things as much as possible though as there definitely is a lot of pressure for popularity and success, especially with social media and the internet. I just try to make the best music I possibly can and keep progressing.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along? Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Yes lots and lots! Next up is another single on Saucy featuring Gid Sedgwick and Cureton that’s quite different to what you’ve heard from me before, it’s also got a remix EP that I couldn’t be happier with. After that there is another single with Bingo Bass and a few more tracks and collaborations all landing before the end of this year.
Any plans to hit the road?
Not as of yet but we do have some exciting plans in the works so fingers crossed.
What else is happening next in Barely Royal’s world?
At the moment I’m just spending as much time in the studio as possible, really focusing on learning new techniques and exploring different styles and tempos. I’ve been working closely with a very talented guitarist and song writer which has been a lot of fun and I can’t wait to get this new music out there!
