INTERVIEW: Jeffrey Halford

HOW WOULD YOU CLASSIFY YOUR MUSIC?

“Rock ‘n’ roll country soul” – easy and simple.

WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR TOP 5 INFLUENCES?

Staple singers, Leon and the Shelter People, Howlin Wolf, Ry Cooder, Keith Richards.  Close behind:  Ray Charles and Roger Miller

Songwriters

Doc Pomus , Harry Nilsson, Fred Neil, Willie Dixon

Poets Robert Hass, Pablo Neruda

WHAT DO YOU WANT FANS TO TAKE FROM YOUR MUSIC?

It’s a tough question.  Some of the songs express my greatest joy and sadness and everything else in between. I hope they take it all in and can see life perhaps from a different but yet relatable aspect and for them to decide what speaks to them.

TELL US ABOUT “WEST TOWARDS SOUTH”

This is my first character driven album.

The story of two brothers heading to the Garden of Eden we call California.

I collaborated with my Labelmate, Don Zimmer, from Floating Records (Floatingrecords.com) and we came up with this concept. We put them at the turn of the century and saw a vision of this tale coming together.

I think it’s a really fine album and I’m proud of this collection of songs. I produced this album with my bandmate Adam Rossi, who sonically, really gave this thing what it needed. Some really cool musical twists and turns that match up with what the characters experience.

The writing seemed effortless as well as the music which is what I feel artists strive for.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE/HATE ABOUT THE MUSIC BUSINESS?

Nothing and nothing.  😉

BEST CONCERT YOU HAVE ATTENDED/BEST CONCERT OF PLAYING LIVE?

Attended:  I saw Bob Weir with Michael McClure reciting Jack Kerouac poems in music.  It was wild.

As far as playing live ,we did a show with Mick Fleetwood in a Big theater in Napa, CA.  That was great !  Also the venues in Holland I’ve been playing at for the past few years have been quite an experience and looking forward to the next string of shows in May and June over in Europe.

HOW HAVE YOU EVOLVED AS A SONGWRITER OVER THE PAST 5 YEARS?

Well I stay on it like a moth on a lampshade and I hope that I have evolved.  I’m in control of my art and I like to keep my mind open and stay out of any cookie cutter boxes when it comes to my art as a songwriter.

WHO WOULD YOU DRINK/WRITE/PLAY WITH – LIVING OR DEAD?

Drink with Kerouac

Perform with Leon Russell

WHAT’S UP NEXT FOR JEFFREY HALFORD?

Well I got to get out there and tour on this record.  Going to Holland and Germany in May and have a quite a few dates around California this summer so that is going to keep me busy for the summer.
