Hi Vents! Thanks for having us! It couldn’t be better! We just dropped our debut album and we are so excited to share it with the world.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Castle in The Air”?
“Castle in The Air” is the second single of the album. We released it a few days before the release of the album. It talks about this particular moment when you went through hard times or events, and you realize that these difficulties are behind you and things could get better. There is a positive message behind this song.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Not a particular event, but life in general. Some of us went through some difficulties during the writing process, and they fought it until things got better. But these are not isolated cases, everyone has their own demons to fight whatever if these are huge difficulties or insignificant ones. We tried to write so that everyone could identify themselves.
Any plans to release a music video for the single?
We are not planning on releasing a music video for this song, but we released a lyric video a few days ago. It shows us in front of a panoramic view of our hometown, and a beautiful sunrise, symbol of the message of the song. The video is available on YouTube.
The single comes off your new self-titled album – why naming the record after the band?
Earthstate is like an ideal for us, a project we built from nothing, and now we can share something we are very proud of. It’s exactly what the album talks about, taking the decision to build something new. Each song talks about a different step of this kind of journey, until the reaching of the objective in the last song. Earthstate is like a whole new world reached by a fictional character that you can follow during the ten songs. That’s why it was logical to name the album and the last song like the band.
Would you call this a conceptual record?
We can call this conceptual because there is a thread between the songs: like we said, each one represents a different step from deciding to change something in your life to the final objective. Otherwise, we did not invent anything and didn’t want to. We’re just talking about emotions that we are feeling sometimes, like everybody else, and mixing our various influences, and we are very proud of the result.
How was the recording and writing process?
It took a lot of time, because we didn’t know each other before and we wanted to take the time to build a strong friendship before anything else. We wrote the songs all together in the same room, even if we know from our previous experiences that it takes more time than working separately. With this process, we were sure that everyone could give his ideas and opinion. It was quite an experience to work like that, and we have no regrets about it.
After writing all the songs and recording demos, we recorded and mixed the album with our friend Romain from Acrom Records in our hometown, in Lyon. It was a very good time because we had no pressure, we worked in a very good atmosphere.
What role does Lyon play in your music?
Lyon is the Symbol of Earthstate’s journey, because we came from different cities in France and this is where we decided to stay and build the project. Some of us had to quit their job, their apartment etc, to start a new life in Lyon. It’s exactly the kind of situation the album is referring to.
What were some of the emotions did you get to explore on this record?
The album talks about all the emotions you can feel when you take the decision to leave your life behind, to live something completely new, with the risks you could take by doing it. It could be doubt, fear, illegitimacy… but it could also be positive vibes like joy, euphoria, excitation about a new start and reaching a goal after many efforts and sacrifices.
Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
We all have different musical influences, so we took our inspiration everywhere. That’s why this album is a mix between alternative rock, pop-punk, metalcore, ambient parts, sometimes even rap… We didn’t fix limit, we just tried to stay coherent between the songs and share our emotions on the other hand.
Any plans to hit the road?
Of course! We are working a lot in rehearsals and we can’t wait to play shows everywhere! Unfortunately, our drummer Thibs broke his hand a few days ago, and we had to postpone our Release Party. But we are already working on new dates, so stay tuned!
What else is happening next in Earthstate’s world?
Shows for sure, new content about our first album… And we hope this one is the first of a lot of other ones!
