INTERVIEW: Ray Goren

Hi Ray, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Glad to be here! I have been fantastic, thanks! Can’t complain at all.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “New Beginning”?

“New Beginning,” stylistically is the next evolution of my songwriting and sound. I still love meaningful lyrics — first and foremost. But the overall sound is my sound. “New Beginning” is a combination of everything that has brought me here and my diverse influence base.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

“New Beginning” is a song I want people to listen to and feel empowered to take on their struggle, and to find hope and acceptance in entering a newer better chapter in their life. I have been touring at a lot of high schools and meeting a lot of kids that face struggles. The same type of struggles that I faced. I wanted a song that will empower my audience, the same way artists like J Cole inspired me to get through my issues.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

I will be releasing a lyric video in the next couple weeks!

Why did you name the upcoming EP after this song?

The EP is a new beginning for me artistically. When I was writing this new batch of songs, I felt free and encouraged to write what was true to me, and to record what I know is my true art. Without limiting myself to normal song structures, I wrote in a way that tells my story. Doing so led to my sound and structure… the sound that you will hear in this EP and many other songs I have been writing and producing.

How was the recording and writing process?

The writing process for me often times begins in my car. I will sing a catchy melody/phrase while driving, and if it vibes enough I produce the beat to the melody/phrase. Other times I’ll think of a lyrical story line, and build melody and music behind it later.

As you have grown as a person – how would you say this has influenced your approach to music?

This has influenced my approach to music in such an important way. It taught me to be myself, and to write music that connects on a deep level with so many listeners. At the end of the day, the most powerful music is that which speaks to listeners. This project helped me let go of certain influences in my head and helped me create my most authentic sound.

Was it easy to move to a whole new direction and grow as an artist?

It was super easy to move in this direction because it was the direction my heart has been in for years. I’ve been experimenting with this sound since I was in the 7th grade, and this year it finally came together. The past 2 years I’ve been playing this style of music in my live shows. For example, a song on the EP called “Save Me” was written 2 years ago.

How are you able to balance all your different influences together?

I don’t really make a conscious effort at trying to “balance” anything. I write and produce what I feel. I make an effort to create music and track arrangements that are fresh, but tell my story in a relatable way. I have met nearly 100,000 fans on tour the past 6 months and they have connected with this music on a deeper level than I ever could have imagined.

Do the song’s themes mandate the tone of the song?

I would say they match the vibe for sure. I wouldn’t necessarily want to put a happy beat over a depressing theme and vice versa. I want to make the listener feel what I’m saying, and make sure the music behind it portrays my lyrics significantly.

What made you want touch on these particularly dark themes?

I honestly never intended to write such dark themes, but as mentioned earlier I had an epiphany to be myself and make what my heart wants to make. These dark themes and beats came out of me naturally. I have always had dark thoughts haunt me throughout my life, and I want to help those who are going through what I’m going through with my music.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

The inspiration stemmed from within. I was writing what I felt in my heart. For me, this was the moment I decided to be transparent with my fans. Listeners today crave authentic music. So many unknown acts have become stars overnight through real, powerful, dark music. It’s what my listeners and countless others are looking for.

Anymore plans to hit the road?

I have been touring constantly and have played over 100 shows since last June. I will be on tour with Allstar Nation again in the upcoming weeks and will also be doing an 18 city tour this summer. You can visit my website: www.raygorenofficial.com for dates and tickets.

What else is happening next in Ray Goren’s world?

I have an exciting year ahead. I have been involved with some major projects that I can’t announce yet, but I am beyond stoked. I also have several more songs dropping in the upcoming months. My fans have been asking for this new material, and I am ready to continue sharing my story with them!
