INTERVIEW: Jenna Calandra

Hi Jenna, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’ve been amazing! I’m working on my debut album at The Loft Sound Studio in Syosset on Long Island! I’m super excited to share this record!

Can you talk to us more about your song “Don’t Know Who I Am”?

Don’t Know Who I Am is not a single, it’s something I wanted to share right away before the album comes out and it’s about how I was diagnosed with Autism, a spectrum of a developmental disability. It won’t stop me from chasing my dreams and it absolutely won’t affect my abilities. This song is super emotional and heartwarming, because it tells a story about my diagnosis. I was diagnosed when I was 16 years old- I was in 10th Grade. Being different than everyone else makes me feel unique, strong and capable. I’m proud of who I am. The song is about how I was hospitalized for depression and got diagnosed with autism, I wanted to end my life, because as soon as I got back from hospitalization, I was bullied.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Yes, my diagnosis of being autistic. It’s a spectrum of a developmental disability- recovering from self discovery was a hard situation for me, because I was trying to find out who I am and who I was. I was bullied for being differentwas bullied for my diagnosis. It was a tough path for me, so wrote a song about it.

Any plans to release a video for the track?

I may release a special video for the song- again, it’s not a single- it’s something I wanted to share personally.

I want the world to know the real me and who really am.

How was the recording and writing process?

It was hard to write the songs, coming up with the Track list and all, but it’s finished, the album is set for pre order for April 2nd, which is Autism Awareness day, that’s why I set the album as that day for the pre order because of who am and who was meant to be.

What was it like to work with Donnie Klang and how did that relationship develop?

It’s really amazing to work with Donnie. He was signed with Atlantic Records back in 2008 with Diddy- Donnie is the record producer of my album.

Our relationship with making music just grew together immediately. As soon as I recorded my debut single for I’ll Be, our relationship together just hit and we work so well together. I tell Donnie what I want for my songs for the album, then he would jump into my head and bring the songs to life exactly how want it!!!! It’s crazy and wild how we work together!

How much did he get to influence the album?

A lot! I would open up tDonnie about my past struggles and anxiety I’ve had with the bullying in our sessions. I would give Donnie the concept of the song, what it’s about and the music behind it.

When told him the concept for my debut single, I choked a little while was telling him about the story and concept. I felt like was going back in time as I told Donnie my stories and struggles. But we work together so well and that’swhat’s going to make this album a hit record.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than in your own?

I want to collaborate with Demi Lovato… so so so badly. She is the influence of my debut album. Demi’s self titled record DEMI has made a huge impact of my record.

But this album is from my perspective and from my own struggles. I would love to collaborate with artists but for now, I’m working with myself.

What role does Long Island play in your music?

feel like it’s hard on Long Island in the music scene to get where you want to be or who you want to becomeIt’s like a broken record.

When you try to contact or network with other songwriters, artists or producersit’s tough here on Long Island. I go to an artist development company in Nassau County, which is about an hour away from my home in Suffolk County. My dream is to get signed to a record label- it is hard to get into the music business … as much as want a record deal, it may happen in the future but not at the moment.

Finding lot of live performances and open mics on Long Island is kind of tough. But Long Island is my home and always will be.

How’s your new album coming along?

It’s coming out amazing! It’s actually completed! 12 songs are done and they are ready to distribute to all major music platforms such as Spotify and iTunes. I’m super, emotionally excited about this album!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

The album is entitled JENNA and its coming soonThe Pre order is set for United States, Canada and UK on April 2nd!

What aspect of your life did you get to explore on this record?

It’s all about being passionate and doing what makes you happy. I was going through tough times with anxiety and depression of constantly thinking of getting a record deal. But we all know it is so hard to get into tor music industry. I feel like this record has an impact of my life where felt so man emotions, confusion and ups and downs, where I don’twant to make the album and want to make it with a record label. I learn from these aspects of being an artist and how it affects with my daily schedule and routine, but know being an independent artist is the way to start my career. But growing a fan base is hard for me because I just started out two and a half years ago.

Any plans to hit the road?

I’m planning to. I want to entitle the tours I’ll Be Tour & JENNA World Tour.

It’s a dedication and compilation to the album.

What else is happening next in Jenna Calandra’s world?

Just doing what I love most, inspiring the world and hopefully making this album a reality- hopefully I will be making a second album! You’ll never know! Just be happy and do what you love every day!
