INTERVIEW: Kristen Karma

How would you classify your music?

Kristen Karma: It’s a combination of catchy Dance Beats with Rockin’ Guitar Solos and Melody’s that will be stuck in your head long after the songs have finished.

Who are some of your top 5 musical influences?

Kristen Karma: Avril Lavigne, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, The Veronicas, Kesha.

What do you want fans to take from your music?

Kristen:  That anything is possible and to just believe. All of my music has been influenced and written by some sort of personal experience which can relate through all of my music. I never had a lot of confidence in myself when I started and had troubles believing, but that’s changed. Everything changes once you start believing.

How’s the music scene in your locale?

Kristen Karma: Toronto has a great music scene! There are so many wonderful and talented musicians here and I love finding new bands to share the stage with!

What is the best concert you have been to? What do you like most about playing live?

Kristen Karma: 2002 when I saw Avril Lavigne. She came to Vancouver and completely rocked her set. I can remember she called up a fan to sing with her on stage and when she got back into the audience I she stood next to me and had the biggest smile for the rest of the concert. Its moments like that that’ll stick with someone forever, and that’s what I aim create at my shows.

I love feeding off the energy of the crowd! There’s nothing like fans singing back your lyrics to you and it feels magical.

Is there a song on your latest CD release here that stands out as your personal favorite, and why?

Kristen Karma: My favorite single release was for Believe. I wrote the song for my mother who was battling Cancer at the time. It got her through a lot. She’s currently going through the battle again and she plays the song over and over to remind herself that she needs to believe she will win this battle with Cancer again. This song has touched so many people and the reactions have been amazing.

How have you evolved as an artist over the last year?

Kristen Karma: Over the last year I have spent it mainly travelling and creating new experiences to write about. I also picked up the guitar and am now incorporating that into my live sets! Lots of new music to come!

If you could meet, play a gig, co-write a song, have dinner, have a drink with any band or artist (dead or alive) who would it be?

Kristen Karma: Lady Gaga. She’s a big inspiration to my music and I’d love to sit down and co-write with her.

What’s next for you?

Kristen Karma: I’m currently finishing up some demo’s and then will be heading back into the studio to finish my EP.
