Hi Alexandra, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hello! Thank you very much. I am busy, but the good kind.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Crazy (You Make Me)”?
I wrote “Crazy” in an “I can’t escape you” state of mind. Then, when I recorded it, I was in more of “and I would never want to escape you” state of mind. Its repetitive nature is meant to represent all of the heartache and anxiety of love, but when it’s real, the love will always win!
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
It’s a compilation of a lot of different, messy relationships that broke me down, forcing me to rebuild with the confidence of someone with nothing to lose. Then, having that one relationship that made all of the others feel like training for the big leagues!
Any plans to release a video for the single?
I would love to release a simple and silky video for Crazy! Maybe after I finish the other vid that’s in the works.
The single comes off your new EP, Power of Me.What’s the story behind the title?
We are in a self-empowerment era. Learning how to be confident in yourself and your decisions is in. “Power to Me” is the ability to be different and thrive; it’s the feeling of being happy enough to be present.
How was the recording and writing process?
The writing, it was freeing. It was twisted and stagnant sometimes, but it forced me to open new brain doors. The music composition was collaborative with my producers Tom Wardle and Scott Bennett. We had a classic jam session, and we just wrote everything down. Recording it was wild. It felt like stepping into a different character for every song.
What was it like to work with Scott Bennett, and how did that relationship develop?
Scott has an intricate mind. He is, by definition, a perfectionist when it comes to music. I learn from him constantly, and I feel like I can communicate what I want in my music better because of him! He and his wife Jenny are like a cool uncle and aunt. My boyfriend Kurt Doss and I will go over for dinner, game nights and jam sessions. Scott is a wonderful person and extremely talented.
How much did he get to influence the album?
He had a huge impact! Scott helped me find the moods and colors of this album. This was my debut album, and he made sure it was best it could be.
How have Sia and Amy Winehouse influenced your writing?
I love Sia’s abstract and colorful music. I like how she’s always a surprise. Amy, on the other hand, was more abstract in her phrasing, which I can appreciate. I adore Amy Winehouse because she appreciated the therapy that music can provide, and she shared all those feelings to others. She had a soulful jazzy voice that will always be remembered. I also adore Lady Gaga and would definitely consider her a huge influence on me for self love and for making choices from your heart and your mind.
What aspect of your life did you get to explore on this record?
Growing up. I went through all these different stages of feeling like the world was ending and then feeling in control but never all the way. You know that feeling? For me, it was from 12 years old to still happening now. I wrote about the journey of trying to fit in to trying to be happy.
Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
Things people actually have done, my own thoughts. It’s wrecked with real emotions and sprinkled with some imagination.
Any plans to hit the road?
What else is happening next in Alexandra Rae’s world?
Well, now that the album release party is done, I have some music videos I am working on for “Power to Me” and a few singles that have yet to be released. Be on the lookout. After that, I’ll get to work on recording some of the new stuff I’ve been playing around with.
