Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Easy”?
Easy is a defining song for us. We often finish sets with it because it has the space to really take people on a ride. More often than not we don’t know where we are going when playing it which is the way we like it.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
The passing of time and reflecting on that.
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
Ah it was enjoyable. Shooting the video live in the studio with INIT creative – some very talented friends of ours – made it a smooth process.
The single comes off your new album Are We Lost – what’s the story behind the title?
It was a few days after an initial discussion about what we were going to call the album. We were somewhere in the outback of Australia looking for a place to sleep when Holly’s sister, Ella, comes out with ‘Are We Lost?’. It felt like a multidimensional statement, and we knew right away that’s what the album should be called.
How was the recording and writing process?
The writing process is rarely forced and the hard work comes in mostly in the recording. We don’t know the full potential of a song until we sit down in a studio and work it out.
How has the 1960’s influenced your music?
The 60s is where our musical foundations are. We might not be into music as much as we are today if our parents hadn’t played us strange old records.
What music has influenced your writing?
We like music that hit home. That have some kind of truth or honesty in them. That could be in the words or the feeling in a riff or a rhythm. If one artist had to be picked as an influence to Easy, then it would be Nick Cave.
What role does East Yorkshire play in your music?
East Yorkshire is where we’re from, part of our identities and so naturally part of our music too. We’ve honed many of our skills in the clubs and pubs around the area as we learned from watching others.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
Easy was one of those songs that just wrote itself and it’s hard to say where this kind of a song comes from. It had been fermenting away in the background for a while and ideas would come now and again when outside cutting the grass and things like that. Then one afternoon it pretty much came out fully formed. It’s probably best not spending too long thinking about where it came from.
