Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Crushin’”?
My producer and I came up with the idea in the studio and we just started writing. We wanted to be relevant and kids my age definitely are starting to crush on boys/girls.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Having a crush on Piper Rockelle. haha
How was the filming process and experience behind the video?
I was so excited Piper Rockelle and I started to become really good friends and we went to Santa Monica Pier and hung out riding all the rollercoasters and just having fun. It was tough; we were losing light and had a few scenes left and our dogs complicated things a little. They got off the leash at one point and started to run away as we were filming the under the pier scene. It was also freezing under the pier so we had to play it off like it wasn’t.
How was the recording and writing process?
So much fun. Andrew Lane (my producer) and I just started to write and then we found a beat and the rest is history.
With the major success from all your previous work (both videos and songs) – does that put any pressure on you as you work on new material or rather the opposite?
Yes! Lots of pressure, in a good way. Now it’s time to really go harder, better, and let the fans see my rap skills. I actually started to sing after I was discovered as a rapper.
Speaking of pressure, some outlets have labeled you as the next JB – how does that make you feel and are you hoping to rise to the hype or rather stray away from it?
WOW! Well it is some big shoes to fill. I get Justin Bieber and Johnny Orlando a lot! Both are amazing. It just makes me work harder to achieve my dream!
Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than on your own?
It’s not a different approach, it’s more fun. Two minds are always better on the creative side. For instance, I work with Piper Rockelle a lot and we have a lot of fun with creative stuff and ideas.
How does your acting and hosting background influence your music and the other way around?
It all goes together. I’m doing a concert where I’m hosting and singing called Kidapalooza in April. We also are doing meet and greets.
Does the new single mean we can expect new material – how’s that coming along?
It’s about being a tween. I have a song with Piper Rockelle called “No Me Without You” and another one which is my rap song with a really cool beat called “They Already Know”. It’s about my journey into entertainment and the pitfalls bullying, etc.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Yes, spring. Stay tuned.
Any plans to hit the road?
Yes, I plan on touring with Rock Your Hair in summer and maybe Boys of Summer again. We’ll see. I’m really focusing on my own tour dates for winter.
What else is happening next in Gavin Magnus’ world?
LOTS! I can’t say much about it but it’s on the acting side; huge projects I’m really excited about and two more music videos.
