INTERVIEW: Samurai Champs

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

We’ve been good and very busy. Preparing our upcoming album.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Bae”?

Yeah as you know we just released our latest single “Bae”. It’s a smooth hiphop and RnB Single. Really taking roots from 90s RnB with a touch of what’s relevant today. We really wanted to make something you could just ride with and sing along too.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I would say most of the inspiration came from the women we appreciate and look up to. I wouldn’t say one in particular but a collaborative number of events involving the people that have been down for us, inspired the song.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

We definitely have plans for it!

How was the recording and writing process?

The writing process was smooth everything came together the same day we started writing it. The recording process felt really natural as well. We brought in our good friend and recording engineer Walter Ernest to help blend the smooth RnB & hiphop sounds for this single.

What role does Canada play in your writing?

Canada helps us take in diversity and that allows us to add our own unique touches to our writing. Especially through the experiences shared here in Canada among the differences we have.

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than on your own?

I would say so. We work pretty closely together as far as writing and restructuring the songs to fit each of us stylistically. I feel like when we do a feature with someone else we really feed off of the mood of their song and build from that point on, almost creating another extension of ourselves. Definitely helps push boundaries stylistically.

How your upbringing influences your music? Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Everything song we make is drawn from our experiences. So growing up as a immigrant definitely helped me see strong values with family and being a victim of racism helps me further understand diversity. It allows our music to break down those walls and open up about real things. The new single is a good sign to expect new material coming and we’re excited to share it with everyone.

Any tentative release date or title in mind? Any plans to hit the road?

We are shooting for May for our release of our full length album “Cabernet Sauvignon”. We have some dates planned and plan to do some touring in Canada. Also hopefully make our way to Singapore this year.

What else is happening next in Samurai Champs’ world?

We have lots we want to show you guys but right now the release of a couple more singles along with our album “Cabernet Sauvignon” coming this May.
