INTERVIEW: Fly By Nite

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

We’ve been great, thanks!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Night People”?

“Night People” is a song about the magic of night-time. There is a special kind of curiosity and anticipation that takes over when a good night begins, and that moment is the one we’re trying to capture here.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

No particular event, but many experiences, all of which have that feeling of excitement in common, and that urge to explore the unknown and make memories.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes, there will be a lyric video.

How was the recording and writing process?

We wrote the core of the song in L.A., with just a Wurlitzer piano and Amanda Fondell singing in the room. We knew right after that session that “Night People” has a strong vibe to it, so we finished it via video call between LA, Berlin and Stockholm.

What was it like to work with Amanda Fondell?

Amanda’s great! She’s such a kind person, and insanely talented.

Was she always meant to be part of this track or how did she come on board?

In the beginning of the creative process it wasn’t clear where the song would be going style wise, but as soon as we cut the guide vocals with Amanda and started on the production it became obvious that Amanda’s voice and the track are a perfect match.

How much did she get to influence the song?

She co-wrote it with us, so it is as much her song as it is ours!

Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else rather than on your own?

Not really. To us, making music is always about creating something that has a certain kind of emotional density to it. If anything, working with others simply makes it more inspiring.

How did you go to balance the dark elements of the song with the much brighter undertones?

That balance just came to us naturally. Given the lyric of the song, it made sense to have sounds in the track that represent anticipation and excitement. But at the same time there had to be that element of the unknown, which can be frightening at times.

Does the new single mean we can expect new material – how’s that coming along?

Absolutely! We’re constantly working on new material, and there are some tunes in the making that we’re definitely excited about.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Not yet, but we’ll keep you guys posted for sure!

Any plans to hit the road?

Not at this point in time. This is our first release with this project, so for now we’re focusing on more songwriting and production.

What else is happening next in Fly By Nite’s world?

The beauty of FLY BY NITE is that we get to work with singers around the globe, so we’ll be travelling in pursuit of new collaborations. We’ll be writing songs in Europe and the US, and then take that material and finalize it out of our studios in L.A. and Berlin. The journey has just begun!
